'Aul midi woes...?

Hey all,

I'm trying to connect a few things together - but this midi stuff just gets me.

I recently bought an M-audio Fastrack Pro which I have hooked up to a
fairly good netbook running Reaper.
It took me while to figure out how things midi were routed in Reaper -
but I think I have the basics of that now.

My midi woes 'appear' to be at the keyboard end of things.
What I want to do is to Hook up my O1w ProX 88 to play the TC.
Hook the TC up to the M-Audio going into reaper, and then Reaper playback via M-Audio into TC again.

So, AFAIK, I take the Midi out from the PRoX into Triton - Then the Midi Out from Triton into M-Audio/Reaper,
and the Midi out from Reaper/M-Audio back into Triton Midi in For playback.

Here's the thing.
If I play on tritons keyboard - it transmits midi data no problem for recording into reaper -
the Midi activity lights up on the M-audio interface when I play also.
BUt, when I play the Prox to play the triton as it were - nothing.???
The ProX 'Plays' the Triton alright - that is I use the ProX keyboard midi-ed into the Triton and the Triton sounds fine,
but no midi activity indicated on the M-Audio nor in reaper.....?
and get this - even with local control turned off on Triton - when I play the keyboard - although there is no sound,
I get midi activity in the M-audio reaper!!!????
What is going on?
Any help plz.

Peace
Ausser

PS: Triton TC and the ProX also have midi Thru ports - but the M-Audio only has Midi I/O.

PPS: I going to try hooking the PROx Direct up to M-Audio and then M-Audio into Triton.
BUt I want to know why it wont seem to work the other way, ie ProX into triton - triton into M-Audio/reaper.

There isn't anything unusual going on here.

MIDI Out only sends messages generated from the keyboard. It does not pass messages arriving at the 'in' through. The MIDI Thru port is for that (it repeats whatever arrives at the in).

Not many devices combine their own generated messages with whatever is arriving at the input (effectively creating an 'Out + Thru' post). So the only way to achieve that is to connect each device to a MIDI patchbay or to your MIDI interface, and do all the routing in software, or to get a MIDI merge box to combine the Out and Thru ports on your triton.

Similarly, 'Local Off' does not stop the device from transmitting MIDI. It disconnects the physical controls from the sound engine, such that playing the controls generates MIDI, and incoming MIDI controls the sounds of the synth, but the two aren't connected within the machine. 'Local Off' is typically used when working with a DAW where a loop is created (i.e. playing a note makes a sound, but the MIDI eventually makes it way back around and double-triggers the notes), so that the synth is responding to the keyboards messages when it passes back around the loop. Another good reason why the above on 'In+Thru' is not implemented as the norm, because you would produce an infinite MIDI loop if it were placed in a loop.

So , hook the Prox Midi out up to Triton's Midi in.
And the Fast track up to Tritons Midi Thru.

OR,

ProX up to The FastTrack In.
then route it in reaper to the FastTrack Midi Out port, and the FastTrack Midi out to the Triton In.

Got it!

That should give me the ability to record into Reaper and playback from Reaper without having to pull leads in and out.
I shall try that tomorrow.

Thanks - thats great X-Trade.
Telling me what the midi ports actually do was really helpful - as their names, Midi In - Out - Thru, can be a bit misleading in relation to how they actually function.
But they do make sense midiwise.

Peace
Ausser.

Just an update on that.

Its working perfectly - well almost but for a little fine tuning in Reaper.

My connection method is this:

ProX Midi Out - to - Fastrack Midi In (into reaper)
Fastrack Midi Out (Reaper) - to Triton Midi In.

That simple.

I can set to monitor Midi Out in Reaper so it plays the Triton.
This way I can hear what I'm playing into Reaper on the Triton,
and then hear the playback also - without having to pull leads in and out.
I think I detect a little latency (miniscule) on monitoring the midi live -
ie. from the proX thru Fastrack into Reaper
and out thru fasttrack to the triton,
but its barely discernable - if atall really -
might be more my imagination lol.
I have yet to mess with the latency settings on Reaper and the Fastrack which I haven't set to lowest setting yet.

Thanks again X-Trade.
Although it now seems like a real noob question over midi, your info really did point me in the right direction.

Peace
Ausser.
