is it more damaging to shut it off at the end of your sessions
or to leave it on
do any of you leave it on all the time

Most of the time I shut it down,
but only due to the touchscreen, which has no screensaver.
I leave the other synths on.

My computers and SoundsCards were last shut down in 2007, the M3 once in
2-3 weeks and same with the other synths...never had a problem...as for
computers we all know the less you restart the better.

screensavers are actually redundant in modern flat screens which don't suffer from image burning.
I do however never leave my equipment on. First and foremost it is a massive and irresponsible waste of electricity.

this is true.
I really hate baby seals and can't stand Amazon natives, and of course, judging by my name, I am a strong supporter of oil dependence from Arab countries,
that's why I try doing as much environmental damage as I can with my equipment.
Come ooooooooonnnnnn! Synths are made of aluminum: just
building an m3 wastes more energy that keeping it on for one year!
I don't mean to be mean, but... if we want to go green, buying "big box" synthesizers like the m3 is not exactly a starting point,
and balancing it with "pressing the buttons less often" smells of hypochrisy.

I don't see validity of your argument.
Yes, you are spending energy, but you are using it to build M3.
If you just leave M3 on for ever, that electricity is wasted! Nothing was done with an idle M3.

If you really want to go green, you won't play any electronic instruments, or take it a step further and have no power in your house at all.
The point is that if you're going to use something that draws power, it's most environmentally responsible to shut it off when it's not in use. Just because something cost a lot of energy to make, that doesn't mean that it's ok, with respect to the planet, to do stupid things with it.

Really? I've been a programmer for 17 years and never heard anything to that effect. What advantage(s) are there in restarting less often? I only own one machine, a laptop, that is used for music, gaming, web surfing, and everything else, plus it's a Windows machine, I perform with it regularly, and shut it down every night, and I've never had any problems with it.

Apparently the lore goes that computer restarts put more wear and tear on the hardware components of the system and may contribute to faster destabilisation of the OS. But I only have this on the say-so of others that I know; I'm no computer tech so I couldn't possibly offer any evaluation on this.
For myself, I always shut my machines down, and while I'd like to claim it's for virtuous environmental reasons, it's actually more because I live in a place with dodgy wiring and wouldn't trust the electrics to not burn the house down
It's also an old habit I have from older synths as a lot of my gear has backlight displays, it being thus an attempt to get the most out of the lifespan of the backlight.

unfortunately, yes they do. I've seen plenty of flat screen monitors as well as LCD TV's with screen burn.

Guys, relax please and talk about music and M3, not what the Lobyists did to
your brains with the Climate Bull$hit and other brain manipulation, i dont
understand what M3 has to do with GoGreen...if i had 100 M3s i will leave them
on forever and waste as much energy as i can, till the planet burns out.
This is outrageous...bringing bullshit to the forum too.

k so i've heard that turning your computer OFF and ON every day isn't that good for it... but when i leave it on and put it into sleep mode, after a week i get a bunch of errors on it. so... someone explain why leaving it on is better than turning it off again?
I turn my M3 off whenever i'm done for the day, for a few reasons:
a. I don't really trust surge protectors since a car accident a mile away caused a power surge and fried my TV at home, even though it was plugged into a surge protector.
b. My M3 and my 01/Wfd both feel warm after leaving it on for a long period of time. Yes, it may not be a lot of heat, but it gives me the idea that there's electrical current going through something and who knows what piece of dust or corrosion could cause some freak thing to go wrong inside one of my workstations... i love and need both of them!
c. The screen - it's common knowledge that the 01/W's screen's brightness fades over time, who's to say the same thing couldn't happen in the M3's? I'd rather not have to replace the touch screen in a Korg M3, that could get pretty pricey. and there's also the burn-in factor as mentioned earlier. I too have seen lots of LCD screens that have the whole burn-in thing going on, so annoying! and M3's screen has lots of burn-in-able areas on it. How's the Trinity faring? any common screen issues to be seen on those?
What do the people at Korg have to say about turning the M3 on and off?
BTW ... i don't think the M3 uses that much electricity. get a simple hair style that doesn't require a hair dryer and you can say you're doing your part

Yes but people are Hypocrytes like my Diabetic XFatherinLaw...drinking
coffee with Sweet'n'Low and at the same time eating regular Apple Pie.
Same with THESE GO GREENERS in here, they try to save on M3...while...

I turn off everything and even unplug the power strip (APC Power Conditioner actually) when not in use. I don't need a power surge or lightning strike to kill my gear.

Everything gets shut down when not in use. It's just common sense. I'd rather spend the money I save on something I need rather than hand it over to the electric companies.
