How do you create a STY file on a sequencer like "Propellerhead Reason" because there is no way to export as a STY file, but there is MIDI.

Is there anyway to export MIDI and then be able to use it as a style on Korg Pa800?

No,you can't make styles with Reason.

Yes, you can make midi files and then chop'em off into seperate files ( Intro 1, ...Var 1....Ending 1 ), and then import them one by one...It's the fastest way to make styles, or sequence songs. At least, this is how i approach this.

If you need details, there's some excellent threads for that on here,you just have to find them. Rikki wrote a lot about making styles out of midi files. If i found them, i'll post the link for you.

It's the best way to make styles, song-styles and sequences. For one thing, you see all notes/midi events on a nice big monitor without having to keep going from this page to that page. You don't have to chase for notes. I don't even know the menu pages of PA 800 well, because i rarely use them. I love it. If you want to experiment with anything else, you just copy and paste on the spot and still see every thing on the same screen. I don't want to discourage people who never leave their keyboard when creating music. By all means do whatever you're comfortable with.

what's you're version of a song specific style??
Some of the yammie styles I've seen around have been created from a midifile of the song. You basically end up with the song specific intro, plus the 4 variations & fills. In some instances the variations could also be used for other tunes. They're just a looping 4 or 8 bar pattern copied from sections of the midifile. The yammie version above, any chord changes would have to be removed from the variations.

Not sure if Sam's version of a song specific style is the same as the above. The Korg is capable of so much more.

My description of a song specific style is ...let's say I want to play Andrew LLoyde 'Webbers's 'All I Ask Of You'. I would like a style to be able to do into...variations etc and ending that fit the song exactly...especially with all the counter melody and instrument accomapyments.

I would be very happy if that could be done without having to actually come up with all the music...in other words from a standard MIDI file of the song. I am a better technician than musician. ,

Sounds hard??

The ones that i make don't have a midi file available so i have to start them from the scratch. Principles are the same. No chord progression must be recorded in Vars..etc

This is how i do it. I import the song (usually a wave file or mp3) into pro tools. Then I listen to it reall good and put markers to call the sections as Intro, Var 1....Fill 1....Ending. I delete every thing in between, so i end up with all these little chunks of audio that each is a potential element for the style. Intros and bridges are self explanatory. I pick the 3 most important Fills from the song, and work on those for fills. Vars are little bit tricky so i usually experiment with few things to see which works best. The trick is to be able to think of the harmonic progression as a rhythmic progression. Some times you have to compromise a few things here and there, but you can still get them fairly close. The thing is that if i try to get it too close, then i can use that only and only for that song. It works great for me. One major complaint that i have is this Var cueing PROBLEM. It's a totally retarded stupid decision that KORG has made for song styles. If I forget to Fill, the next VAR will not start at measure 1......I have very little hope to see this fixed in the new OS


Edit: Holy shitttttttttttttt, i just saw it on Korgpa.com. New Cue modes for Fills and Variations. Key Signature event can be edited. Import/Export SMF Separated by Markers?????????? so we no longer have to import/export them one by one???wow

Please help me find manual for:Import/Export SMF Separated by Markers

Now you can create styles from midi files just by setting in markers.That's great. In the manual it says

For detailed information on how to create a Standard Midi File
Separated by Markers that can be converted to a Pa Style (and
vice-versa), please download the dedicated manual from our

But I just can't find that manual at www.korgpa.com

Does anybody know where that manual is !!!!!!!

I was told that Korg are writing a separate user guide to assist everyone in creating new styles. The manual is not finished yet. But it is great news that Korg have added a number of new facilities to make style creation easier. These additions are a very welcome surprise to me!

oK, just loaded the new OS. phew! I can't believe they finally decided to extend Fill cue capabilities to forgotten Vars as well. Dude, i just tried it now, and the difference is huuuuuuuge. You dont' have to Fill like crazy anymore just to reset the next Var. I'm definitely happy about this.

I haven't got a chance to read the new manual yet. What is this about? Is it only for importing multiple CVs within one element, or is it about importing the entire style elements all at once? Either way, it would still be an upgrade.

I had a feeling you did yours from scratch, WAY beyond my capabilities musically. Interesting reading on how you go about it.

New tools ,amazing. We were only discussing a few weeks ago how great it would be to have the Cue function for the variations , not only for the fills, plus the markers for the Import/Export function. ( Haven't checked that one out yet) & something about Expression & making it easier to adjust?? Also I hadn't noticed the bit on the key signatures??
I didn't get a great deal of time to spend on it today, & tomorrow we're going away for the night. Darn haah

I know! i can't get over this cue function. It's great. I still haven't read the manual yet. The new TS function? So maybe we don't have to copy elements with different time signatures to empty slots any more to have multiple TS?

Ah, never mind Rikki!! My bad! I thought i saw a new Time signature function, but it turns out i was day dreaming! It's not "Time signature", it's "key signature" in the sequencer mode, so has nothing to do with styles.

just got back home. Looking forward to finally spending some time on the new os.
Note: you did originally write Key Signature, not Time Signature.
Dreaming doesn't hurt, haahaa, maybe one day it will happen. Afterall we did end up with cue mode for variations, a couple of weeks ago that was only a dream too.
