You bought a USB cable, but in this case it isn't for audio. I recommend you read this:

http://www.tweakheadz.com/how_to_get_st ... _midi.html

It'll give you a good idea about what your trying to do.

The USB connection is only for MIDI data. You can play/record MIDI data using that hook up, but not audio. You'll have to connect the audio outputs of your synth into the line inputs of the soundcard to record audio.

You deserve what you get when you trust a GuitarCenter salesperson instead of finding out the true, accurate information for yourself.

GuitarCenter staff should only be used to see if they have what you want in stock and then handle the purchase transaction. Never rely on them for advise about what to buy. I'd sooner flip a coin, because at least a coin doesn't have an incentive to cheat you and 50/50 is a much better rate of accuracy than salesman usually achieve. Better yet, research it yourself before you go to the store, since it will save you time (and gasoline) to buy what you actually need, instead of what they want to sell you.
