Electribe & Ableton
Hey everyone, I've recently been trying out Ableton and now want to use it to control my E-MX1 while also using Ableton's sampler etc. I'm not very up on midi or Ableton so I'm having a lot of problems with it. What would really help, if someone would be so kind, is if someone could post a screenshot of how Ableton's IO setup should look like when there is a separate channel for Drums and a channel for each of the five synth parts. Or if anyone has an Ableton (.als) file with this set up it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!
omg, I need a laptop and abelton for sequencing.
That would be so awesome.

Many thanks for that! The reason I want to use Ableton to control the Electribe is because of the simplicity of using Ableton's clips to say, change between drum patterns on the go while keeping synth sounds playing & vice versa. I'd be interested to hear more from anyone using the Electribe to control Ableton or the other way around...
ya but ableton's sound is superior by far to electribes.... so I don't see why you want to sequence bad sounds with a good sequencer when you could just do it all in ableton.... it would actually make more sence to sequence ableton with the electribe because you gain in sound qualities and possibilities.

you can use the emx1 as a sound module if you want. the main advantage is being able to label the clips in abletom with words rather than the numbers on the EMX1. also you dont have to change patterns on the emx1 either. live with also insert patch changes for you too if you want to switch synth patches as well.
typically i sequence the EM1 for drums, then use midi with other synths.. sequenced drums sounds much bettter to my ears than sampled btw.. but I think it's a shame to relegate the emx1 to sound module duties.. which is why i dont use it. i prefer full blown VAs sequenced xox style from ableton ..

Live on a laptop is awesome.Get a decent soundcard to connect your gear(and a decent midi interface)and your flying!Obviously the one thing you have with the mx is control over velocities.I have to agree with Ruso about the sound quality though but the recent thread about the valves has got me wondering if its worth upgrading the tubes..Setsonics wrote:omg, I need a laptop and abelton for sequencing.

Anyway live is most def the center of my setup, everything ends up in Live

Ha!Thats pretty much how i set it up!Ruso wrote:
I'm thinking about one thing tho... why would you want to control the emx out of ableton? I think controlling ableton with the emx is a much better option, it's a wicked sequencer...

you can do both at different tims
first you can use ableton´s to send midi data to the electribe sequencer
things like ultra-controlled motion sequences could be achieved that way
then use electribe to control ableton...i agree ruso that this is by bar the best option
the electribe is much more a performance tool, more inmediate and reliable than a laptop...
the clock is very stable, and if the computer crash the electribe could stay running until you reboot

I'm a bit new to all this so this is all very informative to me but I don't understand why you would use the Electribe to control Ableton when you could just buy a midi controller to do that?anselmi wrote:you can do both at different tims

of course you can do that too, but your initial post was abouts using ableton and an EMX, so I answer it following the ruso line of using the electribe to SEQUENCE the abletonpockets wrote:I'm a bit new to all this so this is all very informative to me but I don't understand why you would use the Electribe to control Ableton when you could just buy a midi controller to do that?anselmi wrote:you can do both at different tims

If you have a controller and want to use it too you can plug the 3 things in different ways...it depends of what connector you have in the controller, and another features as midi merge
If It´s your case tell me what controller do you have and what do you want to control with it: ableton, EMX or both
Hi, I forgot we were starting to go off-topic a bit! I'm going to be away from my laptop + Electribe for the next couple of weeks so won't have a chance to do much until then. Using an M-Audio Firewire 410 soundcard and there's also an Evolution 33e (think that's what it is) midi controller at my disposal. Only thing is, the laptop is on its last legs, USB ports fried so can't plug in the midi controller! Christmas is coming soon though isn't it?anselmi wrote: of course you can do that too, but your initial post was abouts using ableton and an EMX, so I answer it following the ruso line of using the electribe to SEQUENCE the ableton
