How I got an old Yamaha switch type pedal to work as a Sostenuto pedal on my TR88:

1) Plug a switch type (send ON/OFF signal) pedal into the "Assignable Switch" jack at back of TR88.
2) Press GLOBAL mode button.
3) Press F3 to access the FOOT tab.
4) Foot SW assign: Sostenuto.
5) Test to see if it works. (Sostenuto is operated with this switch pedal, not the damper pedal.)
• If it works, you're done. Go back to Combi or Program mode and play away.
• If it doesn't work, change the Foot SW Polarity to (+). It should work now.

NOTE: The Assignable Switch/Pedal settings are temporary and will revert to Factory settings when you re-start the TR.

• As you can see, the FOOT tab (page) in GLOBAL mode is where you assign different functions for both the Assignable Switch and the Assignable Pedal, as well as polarity for both.

Actually you can save them. They are saved together with all the global settings. Enter global mode and use the utility menu.
I also think you can use your pedal with the damper jack (same thing with the polarity) which is better for playing piano than the sostenuto setting.

Cool. I didn't know that I could save the settings. I'll check that out.

I have a pedal for the damper. No problems there. It was Sostenuto I was looking for.
