Nord Stage 3 worship sounds - on Kronos???

This may not be popular to hear on a Kronos forum, but I am in love with some of the worship piano and pads sounds that are possible on the Nord Stage 3. I have seriously thought about buying a Nord but would rather try tweaking my Kronos to imitate the sound, I just don't know how.

Does anybody know how to tweak/adjust the Kronos to come close to this type of sound? I would be very grateful.

I would be happy to pay somebody to create some creative patches that do this on the Kronos, if it is possible.

Hi there,

If you never yet created custom combis, I would recommend to start with this first goal. First, find a pad program (and there are lots available in the Kronos

) which according to you sounds close to what you hear in the video. Do you search per category (with strings or pads).

Then look for a piano sound that you think sounds very close as well. On the video, this piano sound seems a bit of a mix between acoustic and electric, so test all the Kronos piano programs to see what you think is close to it.

Then create a new combi with those two programs, adjusting their respective volumes, effects, etc. Of course, someone else could create it all for you, but as the quote goes "show a man how to catch fish and you feed him for a lifetime". Don't hesitate to ask more questions, people can help you here. The Kronos is a monster machine so to master it takes time and effort.

First of all.
The Kronos is capable of a whole lot more than the Nord Stage can do.
It’s also a lot more complex…

But sound and playability is always a bit subjective, so I might be a little biased.

I own and use both - But I find it a lot easier to build dynamic and «big» sounds with the tools that are available in the Kronos.
However - The Nord is quick, light and has a faster workflow for tweaking sounds on the fly. I also prefer the organs in the Nord over the CX3 in the Kronos..

But in my experience - Pads, strings/orchestral etc (for me) are superior on the Kronos vs what I can achieve on the Nord stage.

What I normally do for worship-piano + pad on the Kronos, is more or less the same as KK suggests.
Find one or more pas that work, combine in a Combi with your piano of choice - And then add (lots of) reverb/shimmer on the piano. (Make it adjustable..)

That should give you something to experiment with.

As stated above, I have never heard anything from a Nord I couldn't do on a Kronos. In fact, I usually get so much more from my Kronos than other keyboard players get from "the church Nord".

Thank you Pedja for your kind words. I'm out of town for the next week, but when I get back I'll try and list my tweaks to the Kronos piano. I really think I only used some mild EQ on the German soft grand sound. I'll look when I get back home. Thanks again.

Hey Pedja, sorry it took so long. I can't figure out how to share photos on this forum or I would just put them on here to make it easier. Really, I'm not doing anything special. I have a Kronos X 61 key, using a Studiologic Sl88 to trigger the sounds. I start with program INT-A 000 KRONOS German Grand. I use German D Dark 2s as the piano sample. I have damper resonance +3db, Damper Noise +01db. I have string reso/una cords on with a depth of 89. I have no IFX. My master fx is 100 O-verb with the return to 127. My Studiologic controller is set at semi-hard velocity, so that may influence whatever samples are triggered on the Kronos. That's really it. Hope you get the sound you're looking for. Again, sorry for the late reply, my out of town trip lasted long than expected. Good luck.

Just playing a bit of devils advocate here because I own a Nord Electro 5 and a Kronos and I love what both of them can do. I can say that the sounds coming from Nord are indeed amazing. Also having a sound library they constantly update with new pianos and such is also fantastic.

While I enjoy my Kronos and understand the work they put in on their piano's those Nord Piano's still sound warmer to me. Same with strings too. It's hard to beat Nord in those departments. The playing experience on the Nord is very different. It's made to be hands on so it's the closest to playing a real instrument without the deep menu diving and tweeking the Kronos demands.

If you had the ability to get the Nord I'd recommend getting the Nord to add to your gear closet. It's a completely different type of instrument and playing experience. To get the sounds my Nord has I'd have to dump a few hundred on Korg's EX's buying their Piano expansions.

But it's not just the idea of adding an expansion on the Nord it's that it is a digital piano. It has the ability to adjust the Piano sounds and tweak them just like a real piano. I can't on my Electro as it's not supported but if you're looking at the Stage 3 it supports the Nord Triple Pedal (I wish the Kronos had something like that) so it will the the closest experience to playing an actual Piano.
