Step Sequencer tutorial needed

I am trying to figure out how to program the step recorder to play a simple 4 beat rhythm to be played when I play a triad. I have watched every video on step sequencing and read everything I could but I don't see how to trigger this rhythm. I have consulted Google and my manual but I can't seem to find the answer. Could anyone direct me to a solution? I am using the AL-1 Analog Synthesizer for the particular sound.
Here is my process. I am using the patch Uniformity. What am I doing wrong?
1. Assign the Step Sequencer as an AMS source for Pitch.
2. Set the AMS intensity to +25.
3. Go to the Common Step Sequencer page, set to Start Step 1, end Step 16.
4. Set individual rhythms to match rhythm.
5. Set the step values to 0?
6. Go to the EXi 4-5 page [OSC/Pitch][Pitch EG/Mod]. Set Osc 1 & 2 in the lower sections to "AMS1: Common Step Seq, Intensity +12.00".
