RPPR RULES!!!

Post by spaceman3 »

Finally got around to messing with the RPPR pattern sequencer in KRONOS.
I never realized how super powerfull this would be.
I can create on the fly beats and melodies, anything.
Up to 99 patterns per song. wow!
This is some really cool stuff.
I know for many this might not seem like a big deal, but i am amazed how powefull the RPPR pattern sequencer is.
I have just started exploring this part of KRONOS.
Going to take my music up a notch with this.
The funny thing is, i had the original KORG KARMA synth for over 12 years and i could never get the hang of the RPPR pattern sequencer.
Maybe now, having a big 8 inch color lcd helped my brain to understand RPPR better.
It clicks more.
KRONOS just keeps on making me smile. :) :D :D :D

...now if only Korg would release an update so RPPR shutdown key(s) was (were) assignable or used only the lowest key, instead of reserving all keys from C2 and below for stopping RPPR...not a problem with the K61 (C2 is the lowest note) but you lose a lot of low keys on the 73 and 88...this has been asked for on the forum for some years now...

There are many aspects of the Kronos I've yet to learn, but I also recently (a few months ago) learned how to use RPPR. Wanting to play my keyboard parts live while still doing my main bass guitar duties, I ran into problems being able to pull off all the parts in Hella Good and Billie Jean. We weren't ready to do the click track thing for the drummer, but I remembered I should be able to trigger patterns with the Kronos. RPPR to the rescue!

RPPR is great when it works.
The Only downside is there is no indicator what all are playing, and no exclusive mode.

A fun way I use RPPR is to play the multiple clav tracks on Superstition. The low Eb key plays 2 or 3 previously recorded, one-bar clav grooves that I hit on beat one, while I play a live groove (and most prominent) over that. I set the tempo to our drummer in the 4-bar intro with the tap tempo. Works brilliantly, with no click to the drummer.

I've posted this in a few separate replies in other posts, so I've just copied this, again, from another post:

"Completely off topic (but because the topic regards rppr), and few seem to mention (did you know that)- Korg's rppr can record sysex information only (vs., for example, midi note information) to a note (or multiple notes). You can then affect other notes being played (the midi notes) with (the sysex rppr notes) and apply that sysex information TO the midi notes being played at the same time. I hope you can understand this and how powerful this feature of rppr is! Hope this is clear in what I'm trying to say!"

(In hindsight, I could've worded it for better clarity, but I suppose you can figure it out.)

Now that sounds very interesting. Unfortunately, mind was probably blown just by reading it. Just wish I could see an example to better understand the power you are talking about.

mind blown- haha!

No examples from anywhere I've seen, either. This info was brought over from the Triton days and (SHOULDN'T) be any different on the Kronos. After all, rppr is rppr, regardless of which Korg you own. If you can, test it out. I actually never have, but will eventually, just because I really think this is so cool!! (I'm not sure of any limitations regarding the types of sysex messages that can be recorded, if any, however.)

RPPR is almost there, but the Korg workstations have always refused to include the inspiring loop based facilities of the volcas, electribes and production gear. Things like x0x programming, step modulation, graphical view of notes and controllers.

Much of this functionality could be additional modes on the big touch screen, given that there is no 16 step buttons. Over time they took out the great Triton (pbuh) arpeggiator and forced us to use the semi programmable Karma which does much I couldn't care less about while making programming arp patterns impossible.

Has anyone had inconsistent triggering issues with RPPR. I've found that there is sometimes a short delay after I quickly hit the key, a lot of the time it works instantly but can vary which kind of limits its use on short fast little stabs

No, but I like the fact that I can assign a key range to the arp pattern I'm using when creating a two-voic program or combi in the Karma GE page. I find that very useful for playing lead over the top of the patterns.
