SMF 1 question HELP !!

I bought a SMF 1 song from a third party . I was under the impression that I could simply load the song and every track would be mapped perfectly .Bass track 3, sax track 4 etc etc.. Well it's not ,I managed to figure what instrument goes in what track problem is when I assign the correct instrument to the right track and save the song when I reload the song all my changes are not saved and every track is back at it's normal settings. How can I manage to make my changes stay when I save ?
