External MIDI control for live AMS in Kross

I know this subject has come up before but I haven't yet found a comprehensive answer. Hopefully one of you has the key to my puzzle.
Has anyone out there used an external MIDI controller (NanoKontrol or similar), connected directly to the Kross, for live modification of Kross parameters (Tone Adjust, EG adjust, LFO intensity) ie: multiple assignable alternate modulation sources?
From reading the parameter guide it appears that it is entirely possible for the Kross but the difficulty (for me at least) comes in finding an external MIDI controller which you can preset the control change messages that it sends (without the need for a computer every time you want to play). So perhaps my question is, what are (relatively) cheap MIDI controllers which can operate as standalone controller, with MIDI out and have control change #s assigned to their knobs/switches/sliders?
Thanks
