Electribe 2 "Synth Waves" Visually Analyzed

Post by Chapterhaus »

Tangent first:

Alright guys, I tried recording a performance yesterday at the studio I engineer at, and hit snags upon listening to playback. I thought I heard clipping, or "popping" that would typically be the sound of the wrong audio card or sample rate. So, first question, does it matter what sample rate (44.1, 48 ) I record at? I was recording at 44.1 on my interface (MOTU 2408mk3), would this create sample rate pops?

Now for the subject of this post:

After hearing those clips, I decided to record the 5 basic synth waves that are on the E2, and visually analyze them in Reaper, to see if the waves themselves are arriving into my console already clipping (which can't be determined on the E2, no Output monitoring).

I made a new session at 44100khz. My neutral control settings on the E2 were: 4 beats @ 120 bpm @ 127 Velocity, no filters, every knob at it's respected "zero".

Press Record.
Press Play on E2, switch to next wave while previous wave plays (steps are tied for all four beats, E2 changes wave at next bar precisely).
Hit Stop.

I uploaded the completely unaltered file to Soundcloud. Here is the link:

So, now we're all looking at these completely neutral, unaltered waves. I promise I went through every precaution on our console and in Reaper to assure this. Good news is they aren't clipping (this is at full master volume on the E2). But...

Notice first that each wave fades in and out. Uh, what!? It should start at 0 and either begin going either up or down, instead there is first/last a "soft waveform". This happens on every wave type.

For the SAW wave, shouldn't the wave be completely straight vertically? It's slightly rounded. The same for the PULSE wave, it's edges aren't completely straight vertically.

The BOOST SAW wave, what? It looks like a SAW + SINE wave, not sure what they're going for here.

The TRIANGLE and SINE waves are "perfect", aside from the first and last waveform being "faded".

Why are the first and last waveforms faded, is this standard?
