my first thoughts :
this board is really small,
and could get completely mounted INSIDE the WD
there is a lot of empty space inside for all kind of gimmicks.

this board has so many features , you dont need all of them for the WD
you could install one board , and control 2 / more connected wavedrums
from a central WD unit
yes , is it possible to connect wavedrums .....

is recording and playback of pressure infos possible (Ohm resistance)??

together with a trigger audio recording/playback
you would have a complete recording/playback of
everything what happens while playing the WD
during playback , you can choose another sound...

have you installed such a board already ?
Its very very interesting but not on my immediate to -do-list
so about 60$ for a more than solid MIDI solution.

I've reconfigured my MidiCPU at least 5 times, but never in conjunction with the wavedum. Right now it's going into this weird mechanical X-Y-Z controller mechanism I'm building... at this point I need control surfaces w-a-ay more than I need instruments.

now I recognized that this board is a "one way solution"
MIDI OUT only (but who cares...)

using a regular audio out from the WD
(sitar sound /synth sounds with a long decay time)
would give more flexibility with sustained notes , than short trigger signals ,
so an outside solution with a nice encasing would be best.

does this board have CC controller output as well ?
if yes , you could control filter FX of a synth or multi FX .
and whatever with head pressure from the WD ...(+ from EXP pedal!)

I am really much tempted to order a board for experimenting (later)

ever considered to use the 5th dimension control (whatever this is) ?

The MidiCPU supports up to 12 rotary encoders, or 14 pots, plus switch matrixes, and every other kinda sensor I've ever thrown at it. You should be able to directly tap into the WD pressure sensor signal and have it drive a data line on the MidiCPU.

Highly Liquid also do a Midi-to-Machine board called the MD24 that lets you drive servos, relays and solenoids via a midi sequence. Alla those 'midi xylophones' you see on hacker sites? Powered by the MD24.

John at Highly Liquid is a real mensch... the product support he gives via the forum is unbelievably comprehensive.

The X-Y-Z controller is mechanical... I'm converting rotary pots to really long throw linear faders, then using a 3 axis mechanism to convert hand position in a physical space into fader movement. It's a more elegant machine than you'd expect it to be, but exceptionally old school in execution. If an ondes martenot had been 3 axis, it woulda looked like this, sorta. I'm building it to control spatial positioning of audio within Ableton initially, but I'm assuming other uses will come to light after it's completed.

than only modifying a little bit , its more like inventing (?)

I hope one day you will still find free inputs on the MIDI board
to connect with the pressure sensor (and tell us ?)

there seems to be a lot of "synth" development from the 1920s until today
also the MIDI xylophones & stuff.....again , weired 'n' endless

I can't say enough good things about Highly Liquid; the tech support is jawdropping. They'll draw auxillary circuits and write your sys-ex code for you if it'll help you wring a bit more functionality out of their boards.

I prefer a mechanism over a purely electronic kinda controller... haptics are pretty important for expressivity.

...and Jean Laruendeau holds amazing lore.

agreed + strongly recommended for every MIDI/Synth user
and a customer service like "drawing extra circuits and writing code"
is something that other companies could have a look at...

World + dog are hacking triggering applications together on the Kinect platform, but I'm still convinced that webcam based applications are an equally viable approach.

and no direct use for that at the moment .

for creating tones (for me) probably too much random ...
I am still waiting for a direct brain to MIDI converter (wireless)

btw : I connected my WD XXL directly to my SPD-S
via my second Expression pedal "direct link connector" .

I could use my EXP pedal
to fully control the WD and the SPD-S effects at the same time.
(no shortcuts , no bad smell , no fried devices ...)
the WD pressure did also work over to the SPD-S... ,
but not to full 100% .
For MIDI control with the liquid MIDI board
or for direct expression control of a synthesizer (EXP IN)
I think , a good calibration would do the trick.
Hopefully sbd.is gonna test this in the future.

Actually its possible to increase the sensibility of a Silver/Ori
and to put something on top of it ...

Solution 1
new trigger piezos (27 mm instead of 20mm)
and a potentiometer for volume control (ca 5 Euro)

Solution 2 "2 x Boost"
the internal trigger signals simply need to get amplified and EQed.
The cable that goes from the head sensor to the mainboard ,
needs to be cut and connected to a small preamp /EQ
Output preamp goes to mainboard connector cable .
the same for the RimTrigger cable (with a 2nd preamp)
cheap preamp for 5 - 10 bucks
9 volt from inside Wavedrum
effect: higher sensibility , rim and head signal have separate control
this mod needs basic electronic skills

Solution 3 "Blend / Boost" (my favourite)
this is easy with existing trigger jacks ...
(no need to cut the cables)

WD Headtrigger out --> EQ(booster)pedal ---> WD Rimtrigger Input

the lower bands of the 7 band Guitar EQ emphasize the bass components(head)
the upper bands amplify the higher frequencies of the Rim´s bell sound

works like this :
the rim signal in every WD acustically Xtalks over to the head piezo
with about 80-90 % of its volume

These are original WD Trigger signals
recorded directly from the internal piezotriggers .
This pic shows the X Talk from the rim to the head

leftside half of the picture:
the upper (Stereo left) track is the head signal
there is nearly no X talk down to the rim track


In the right side area of the pic
you can see the strong X-Talk from (downside)Rim up to the head

with "blend / boost"
this "x-talked" rim signal
1.works onto the head algo and PCM as usual ....plus
2.also gets amplified and fed back to the Rim Algorithm ,
--- = back to itself , that means

---it works more sensible now
---louder and very special on the algos
---rim PCMS need to be edited to lower volume

effects :
1.higher sensibility
--tabla on the rim with fingertips
--some algos start to get more "alive"
2.rim Algo recieves head style ("bok") signal and
--rim algo now reacts as if programmed to the head.
--("why does it not sound as if it was programmed to the head ?")
...-->(here it does )
3."head signal plays rim algo "
--this alters the sounds
--even presets get interesting again
4.head and rim sounds get mixed together (I like that very much)
--new sounds
5. a footswitch or a volume pedal can turn this on/off or control the level

All solutions do of course amplify the playing noises/scratches
(sitar triggering with the fingernails in circles ...)

Hopefully there is somebody out there
who knows what I am talking about ...
no need to sell the "old Silver " ,
just to add a few horsepowers .

Waterdrum those are some good ideas. No time to give them a try for fun I have been running through my G2u multi pedal and or an rc Booster into some QSC K10 speakers. Fun but not giving me the new tones from the algos.

not ideas ... tested on the Silver and
soon reality on my to be fully modified Oriental
Since I have this increased sensibility on the Silver
I dont wanna play "normal" sens anymore .

There are so many ways to modify
--- with 1/4 " Mono/Stereo jacks / XLR , boost only or use an EQ
--- internal/external booster , various signal paths and , and ...).
--- integrating the Head2Rim blend/boost option as easy as possible
--- or make it a kind of "Modular System" with various Ins and Outs

Maybe I'll use the 2 channel preamp of this microfone set :
(straight piezo signals only, or even combined with the small microfones)

Guitar (and Bass) players around ?

I found this fantastic idea on Utube .
It is called "GPerc" (G uitar and Perc ussion)
and combines (E) percussion techniques and guitar playing.
Seems to be a (future ?) commercial product .

Below the floating pickguard on the bass string side (!)
he mounted one or more piezos triggers with volume controllers
and then feeds this signal through an FX chain (?).


This might be best signalfood for a modified WD

or for a WD MINI

-guitarist plays Rimsound
and simultaneously Wavedrum can be fully used by percussionist

-or a guitarist can trigger the sitar sounds
and send the sound through a second special FX chain (+delay effect)
by balancing the right/left WD line outs
so many possibilities
