True about the volcas, but they're not nearly as complex and the sound generation is all analog.

Also the reserved space in the code could have just been reserved during development for features they dropped or weren't needed, it doesn't necessarily mean they reserved it for post release upgrades, though it doesn't mean it couldn't be done either. I'm standing by my statement, I wouldn't hold my breath. Sure would be nice though.
Korg gear I own:
electribes EA-1,ER-1,2x ES-1, EMX-1SD, ESX-1SD
DW 8000, Wavestation SR, KP3, Volca Beats, Keys MS 2000 R

Korg gear I've used extensively:
M1, Triton Pro-x 88, SG-1D, NanoPad, NanoKontrol

I would say that there is pretty much no chance of any major updates. I think these boxes are what they are and will stay that way.
Korg MonoPoly, APC 20, Ableton Live, NI Massive, Bass Station rack.

ok but aside from additional modulation and fx chains what synth features are actually missing from the emx in the e2?

I quite like my e2, sound-wise, but hate it's workflow, menu-diving, pads, 4bar pattern, reduction in surface control, unreadable buttons, wasted screen space, and probably a few other things that don't spring to mind! Wait for an update? Not going to happen, get on with it!!!
I agree that the screen could have been better used; but what dont u like about the pads and workflow?

also what features that u routinely use do u need to menu dive to access?

Most of my hands on experience with the current generation of electribes is with the sampler, so I'd be hard pressed to tell you the E2 CAN'T do something the EMX can, however the reduced front panel controls is A big deal to me, IMO, the EMX could have had more controls, Did anyone really want LESS hands on control? Only one editable FX parameter? same for oscillators right? and it could play all its voices simultaneously.....

FWIW, the SOS reviews of both 2014/15 electribe are available :

Sadly, most cons are still relevant a few firmware updates later.

I'd say at least one more major update is due. You guys are forgetting that Korg still needs to implement the Sync Import utility. now whether or not this update addresses individual desires and much needed improvements is another story...

And your assuming they will implement the sync import utility :?:

all valid observations; I did rate the korg esx1 highly but I dont hate this new latest line, also I did not use the emx so I cant comment on it but I do enjoy the sounds of the e2.

I am a bit of a minimalist so I dont mind the sparse design of the the new units

Why?

Well, lets face it, the EMX-1/ESX-1 were superb pieces of kit, the only way to improve them, was to add more FX, better quality sound, more versatility in sound design, and combine both in one unit where each part could be a sample, PCM or waveform. Korg deliberately crippled each generation to force the sale of another unit, should a user require that function.
they would have done with a better bigger screen, and a usb interface;

like imagine a unit same size and design as the emx/esx with sameple and synth capabilities in one box, but maybe black metal finish with colour screen (like on push 2) that displayed waveforms and that could browse sample names. and showed fx routing diagrams.

with a USB connection so it shows up as a hard drive when connected to the PC so u could drag ur wave file directly.

along with an app that allowed daw like left to right arranging and vst hosting and control.

that would be beast mode

^ I am kidding a little but what amazes me is that people still expect to be able to to everything from just the electribe!
Personally I can't afford Elektron gear just yet but I appreciate the fact that the boxes are made to complement each other, not one is the be all end all.
And I think the same should be said about the electribes, using one with the mpc and iPad is amazing, on its own it's cool, esp cuz of the battery power, but together with other gear is where it's at!
I would rather have 2 boxes synced than a mc-909 for example
