I think you are all mad scientists. :)

Be careful or the villagers will be carrying torches to your castles to burn your FRANKENDRUMS.

keep on pushing those limits.

Could you post the pictures to tumblr.com or imgur.com, speedy share doesn't have them on file anymore. I'd like to see what you have done for these mods

I'm curious how using the clip on a guitar headstock worked hot! Waterdrum is some kind of crazy modding savant! I'm learning all I can!

thanx a lot , pepperpotty , for making this a sticky.
2 modification threads (freestoks and mine)as sticky threads
show that it is necessary to improve the WD.
most important for everybody of course is soundediting

enough bla , now I have a little goodie

for all who have ever touched their SD Card already.
"it is of course possible to exchange complete soundbanks ,
and it is also possible to work these new sounds
into your Userbank ....." 8)

one more reason to get in contact with your local SD card..
details will be released as soon as a few people are interested.

I will post these infos and other non trigger related stuff
in this thread as I dont wanna cluster my infos...OK?

also preparing infos about the composition of the ALGOs
and about Expression pedal effects.

When I tested all the ALGos with my BassDrum pedal and my EXP pedal ,
I wanted to know , how strong the different ALGos could be influenced .
here are the results:

This file shows
1.how the ALGos are assembled (sound A and Sound B )
2.how useful an ALGo is , assigned to the rim (1-10)
3.what the difference in sound is , when I use a bassdrum pedal (or a "bang trigger")
(when the ALGo is assigned to the rim)
4.what my EXP pedal does (or , with an unmodded WD , what pressure onto the head does)
5.how to get rid of velocity sensitive and random effects
(I DO hate the WD play random ..., the only one who plays random is me. )
I prefer melodies that can be controlled & repeated.
(Imagine a piano/guitar that plays random...do you want that , really ?)

this file was created as an XLS-datafile , but as I know that OFFICE is not loved ,
I saved it as a *.PDF file.

http://speedy.sh/pcWsa/ALGo-1.pdf

even if you dont use external triggers /EXP pedals (yet , ever )
it can be useful to print this (one) page out , and have a look...

with ALGo 12 I could repeat a soft crash situation (no problem)
that only happened on my ORI , not on my SILVER (??)
could sbd test this ?
If you find a mistake (esp. Tabla), dont keep it , but tell me please

do you like that info ,useful ???

All your other *excellent* work not withstanding, this line stood out...

"(Imagine a piano/guitar that plays random...do you want that , really ?)"

Well, yeah, actually... chaos is a pretty useful tool, musically.

But that's just me...

hi Kaden ,

seems we hit something that goes deep into philosophy
and is definitely absolutely subjective
wikipedia needs many pages (no , I didnt read that ) to explain

a short definition (shure not complete):
chaos:
"...randomness ... or ...the lack of predictability of events."(WIKI)
..."and lack of rules"(Waterdrum)

is
"a pretty useful tool , musically " (Kaden)

all in all , I agree with your opinion ,
because I am a chaotic since the 70s.(not in my job ,not with my bike)
(and it shure needs some chaotic spirit to drill holes into a wavedrum )

as with the "ideal PCM sample set"
there is no good or better , its just a matter of personal taste
(as well as "musical usefulness" ,)
and can not easily be discussed , if at all...

I think however , that these are very interesting topics
and they would definitively deserve an own thread.

the random playing of the wavedrum is not really compatible
with my own built in randomizer ,
not enough chaos inside WD melodies, that is it ...
but both can be deactivated ...

btw : I did some extra work and googled your signature (earlier already)
hopefully "Eccentric Cubicle" arrives tomorrow (I admit , a used one) .
Cool DIY stuff

I am very interested in your brute force midification , esp.the head trigger ,
could you please get a little bit into details ?
(external triggering includes that already...)

Dude... you bought Cubicle? Cheers... that's 2 years of my life in softcover format.

The brute force midi thing was as simple as using my TD-8 module as a trigger-to-midi convertor... the TD-8 is remarkably accommodating in terms of turning a piezo pulse into midi data, and there's a dozen inputs available that can trigger internal sounds as well as pass the data to the midi out to external devices. I harvest piezo elements from dollar store 'personal alarms', and the 600-800 mA spikes they provide are *more* than capable of driving the circuitry. I mounted the head trigger onto the WD externally with double faced tape just to the right of the sensor cover, near the rim, which gave me the entire diameter of the head as ...er... striking distance for some measure of passive volume control.

As I said prior, it worked, sorta, but at the end of the day it was the kind of novelty instrument Reek Havoc was doing with his Midi Fruit triggers back in '84... stick a piezo on *anything*, and a trigger to midi convertor will respond when you whack it.

Except for cats.

yeah , a TD8 has a lot of trigger inputs that can be layered.
useful maybe ? , maybe not ?
My SPD-S has got 2 trigger inputs only , thats enough for me ,
esp. as I can use my own 2 layer samples.

at the moment this one would be the cheapest solution
for one`s own samples:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/alesis_samplep ... ti_pad.htm

but it has only one trigger input and one layer samples ...

btw , most of the time I use samples as attack sounds ,
and prefer sounds that are defined by Algorithms .
ALGos have more variations with external triggering ...
Samples always sound the same.

wishful thinking :
A small sample expansion box
with an SD card for a few own samples + 2 trigger inputs
(by KORG of course) would be soooo awesome ...

Do you know about the Highly Liquid MidiCPU board? There's a number of quality discussions on their forum regarding the challenge of dynamic trigger to midi conversion. The MidiCPU is the absolute business for DIY controllers.
