Well putting it blunt like that makes it make more sense.... I wouldn't go all the way as to say its an addiction. But maybe borderline. I do love the different options.... but then again, how much of different sound can we get from these instruments. How different is the korg sound from the yamaha.... or the yamaha from the Roland. Wouldn't it be funny if they came out and said we have been sharing sample Rom since the original motif fandom and triton days.... that would be crazy.

This will never happen. It's actually the other way round: differentiation, more variations and more sounds are king. You will also see a renaissance of real analog synths.
I'm happy with having a few HW synths, and I'm even more happy that I stopped using SW synths. If you enter the SW synth field, your options explode and you find yourself collecting and maintaining sounds rather than playing music. Time is the most limiting factor!

Keep the Motif XS rack. It is full of wonderful material. If only you could update it to the latest OS with all of the new sounds, you would be in Nirvana! Believe me, if you lose it you will have regrets. The XS is the perfect complement to the Korg M3. The two together are dynamite. You know I'm right.

what do you mean the latest OS... I think I already have it... but how do I know?

nevermind..... I checked. I don't have the most recent... v.1.04. I have 1.03.3

but it doesn't say there are any new sounds in it...

Sorry, but what I meant to imply was that the XS keyboard has had some fabulous OS upgrades with a huge overhaul of the voice banks and functionality specific to the keyboard versons. I don't think you can put the latest and greatest on the rack version.

Just keep the rack. I have the Rack ES and would kill for the basic Rack XS to complement my M3.

IMHO, Apex :

0) sell the yamaha xs

1) go "full" on the M3. Have it "radiased" and "256ed" if it's not yet.

At this point, you'll have plenty of room for samples and plenty of VA power.

2) buy:

2/a) a light and quick masterkeyboard (4 or 5 octaves synth-action or waterfall), expanding the performance capabilities of your m3.

You will then be able to "piano" on the m3 and "solo" on the master, using the m3 sounds.

2/b) buy a cheap analog poly synth. Matrix 1000, or used DSItetr4.

It will add sounds the m3 will NEVER have.

If you fetch 900 from the yammy,

and spend the same amount on the abovementioned (you'd need to add some money for the tetr4, get even with the oberheim matrix 1000),

You'll not regret the yammy.
