The Kronos Inner Workings - For the brave ones ;-)

HIghly dissapointed with Korg's attitude on this. I have to assume they are scared that you will actually make the Kronos software work correctly, and put a few "debuggers" out of work that get paid by the hour.

I too am disappointed by this. You guys did a great job spelunking through the system, and it was a very entertaining read!
I am not surprised that Korg eventually put their foot down though, it's really hard to make judgement calls when it comes to reverse engineering and I bet you there are very few public or private companies that likes having their intellectual property mucked with.
It starts with something innocent, but next up you have someone cracking the sound library authorization scheme and that'd be bad news for Korg and any craftsman whose hard work is now on a torrent somewhere.
Sad nevertheless, I would have liked to see where this could end up.

Sorry guys,
It was not my intention in any way to put you off from Korg, I guarantee that was not the plan...
I don't feel that I was bullied at all, but sometimes you gotta know when to stop,... Korg clearly want to things the way the like, and I have to respect that... regardless if I disagree with it.
What frustrates me here is that Korg asks me to "good luck, please reverse engineer, break the encryption or whatever",... and then say "OK, now stop, you broke our encryption as we asked (without even Thank you for that)..., and now you need to tell us where the flaws in our code for free"... I feel I've been used for nothing...
I also agree that I don't see how Korg can even justify asking me to stop from posting "friendly messages" on this forum, I did state that I will no longer be posting about the Kronos's software, which is what I've done to protect their privacy and honor their wish...
To be honest, with the way they did their design based on an open source system (i.e. a system that has it's source code published publically all over the web for free to download),... I wouldn't be surprised if more than just one 12 year old kids come up someday with a new piece of software/firmware in few months time,... or even something running on Windows even, that would be funny, wouldn't it?! I am honestly surprised why they are asking me "Oh, How did you break our encryption?!"... when this was such a simple thing to do...
I mean kids that I am seeing these days amazes me, take for instance my 7 year old kid alsot speaks HEX fluently... just like his dad!!!... (love you son...)
Anyway, I am glad to know you all, thank you all for your wonderful letters, and the joy to seeing your comments, also a big Thank You to Sharp putting more light on this thread at the time.
I wouldn't worry about legal stuff for now, I've studied law myself in the past, and also worked in a firm as an assistant before, I will let you know if it comes to that someday in case Korg decided to go for it... I'm good...
For the record, I wish Korg the best of luck either way with their products...
In the mean time,...
Farewell and Goodbye...
Best Regards
Heider

I know - the references to IBM in my previous post weren't coincidental.Heider wrote:
By the way in case you wondered on how professional my code can be..., I work for a company ... called IBM, not sure if you have heard of that company before!
Perhaps a true anecdote that will help put things in perspective for you (and hopefully make you feel a bit better).
A few years ago, a friend of mine worked for a large organisation that contracted management of some of its IT systems to IBM. Unfortunately though, he found the application was inadequate for his needs, and he was told that what he sought to achieve was impossible. But he was able to find a design flaw that gave him access to the data he needed. It also happened that this flaw gave him full root access to the system.
He didn't exploit this root access for nefarious means - he simply used it to obtain data that he was told was impossible to obtain. It wasn't even difficult to get this access, to him it seemed like such am obvious flaw that it seemed it must have been intended for him to have this access.
Although he didn't do any damage or cause any harm, he was investigated by the police and nearly lost his job. Ultimately he was able to show that despite having root access, he didn't abuse it. But in the eyes of the law and a big corporation, it was still an unwanted breach.
That same firm that discovered the security breach (which incidentally wasn't their fault) is the same firm that nearly got my friend fired, and the same firm you now work for.
You can bet if it was IBM instead of Korg, they would act exactly the same way.
Just a different perspective.

Hi SeedyLee,...
I am not sure what to say,... throughout the whole discussions your posts has alawys been negative and bitter, or sarcastic even, I am not sure why, but recently (correct me if I'm wrong),... I always thought you were missing the point to be honest, I am going to respond now to you...
Regardless of what code comes out, or access to it, I would like to remind you that I made it very clear that I am happy for Korg to release my code as they see fit, I didn't ask to charge them initially as my release was only intended to help. So, this was made clear from day-1 where I was asking Mr. S. whether Korg were interested if I get this complete, eventually we all know what happened next..
In regards to your post about IBM DB2 and how bad you described it, I totally disagree, I have a lot of evidence that IBM DB2 is much better now than any other database server, I stand by that and defend my company, however, unlike Korg, I am not going to tell you it's flawless and (tough, this is the way it is)... I have to be positive here, we do have our own forums, and they have many different scenarios, we do take feedback and upon we provide case reference numbers and we have complete section for feature-requests, and these are taken very seriousley and most importantly, the customer always kept in the loop about what's going on, and when the change is to be release (or not),.. in all examples mentioned, including my scenario, Korg Support has done nothing but acting as door-bouncers, they done nothing to say (Thank you Mr so and so, for your request, some work is to be done or at least investigated and an ETA is made on -so and so- dates etc, therefore, when it comes to support, I believe IBM support is the best in my opinion... Therefore, your discussions about IBM DB2 has flaws in it, is missing the point really, even Windows or Linux has some bugs sometimes upon releases, feedback is always taken and worked upon with all these companies, I challenge you to give any example where Korg taken a feedback from users by asking them (how do you like our product, what do you like to do to enhane it!?)... look into the users who are unbappy about this, just in this forums people are desperate for these fixes, when I came along (or someone might later), people would love to see changes, if you still disagree that there are many issues and Korg has done nothing to listen, then I don't know what more evidence you need here really?!
IBM is not a small company, and believe it or not, we have "invented" things that stands for today, if you like the Wii console for instance, then remember that my team "IBMers" invented the Wii chipset that operates these joysticks (I bet you had no idea!), IBM invented the Laisec (eye repaire technology), yes we invented that, IBM developed Watson super computer who beat the best human player on the American Jeoperdy TV show this year, IBM developed the first computer to won against the biggest Chess player before anyone even thought it was possible, and IBM did this and that, I LOVE my company and stand by it, IBM who cherish support and feedback from users, and pay a lot of money for surveyours just to listen to people like me and you and think on how to improve and work upon it... I appreciate all that, and can confirm that there is no company in the world who's done more listening than IBM when it comes to improve these inventions...
IBM is still number two company in the world, celebrating it's 100th year last month... why?!... because they work professionally, they listen, and "help", ... I learned a lot from that,... and hence "the point in my posts" here (nothing but to help)... helping uesrs to like these products more, helping Korg to do more sales for having more options in their instruments, I offered to help and also offered to give control to Korg at any time for whatever they liked to do, they decided to shut me down and I respect that, I disagree with it personally, but have to respect it, after all, and I made this clear, with or without a signed NDA with Korg, I refused to hand out any broken code, methods or ways in how to extract it to all and to Korg themselves...
What people are saying here (where you have missed) was simply (thank you Heider, you tried to help, and sorry it didn't work out, we're sad that Korg decided this way, and live goes on...)...
I am not saying Korg is a bad company, not at all, but only responding to your negative points about IBM and how you missinterpreted the points of my work, you cannot compare the two companies whatsoever, as IBM will always be top in my mind since we all IBMers work to always improve the image and products and being thanked for that by ensuring that customers are happy about our products always, or taken feedbacks to ensure or work on what to improve... I'm sorry my friend, you cannot compare the two companies at all...
Also another negative question from you saying (Waw Heider, is there anything you can't do!?)... Well, not sure what's the point in that question really,... the context here is that it was clear from earlier posts that the possibility to enhance the exiting Kronos was made clear with solid evidence, and at the time of taking user-requests or (wish-lists) to see what to work on then, you stood and asked the above question as if you are trying to have a laugh,.. or trying to say "he's talking like as if he can do all these changes",... the answer to that is: this is exactly what MR. S. from Korg thought when he said (good luck with that...), but was surprised and shocked to see the outcome, in 6 working days, I was in, that's all,... just 6 days,... I didn't want to post anything about what (I'm in) meant initially but felt really terrible that someone might kill thier expensive system up so I had to show some evidence to stop from pulling cables and boards out, hopefully just to help...
I Love IBM, you can sit and talk negative about our products all day,... it's still the second company in the world after Coca-Cola, today all IBMers are doing the big march/Walk across London wearing all the IBM T-shirts I'm one of them, raising money (again, helping) more charities and people in need and working on new inventions, I'm sorry, I can't just sit and listen to you talking negative about IBM and be quiet about it, look around you, a lot of good products (i.e. the Wii controller as an example) that you use on a daily bases are inventd by IBM without you knowing it...
So, please, ... don't be negative about what IBM did and try to make a comparison between how the two companies operates, or tell false stories about how IBM got upset for people's feedback... there is a huge difference.... especially when it comes to "IBM Listens!!!" and give customers what they want... which clearly as you can see on this forum and other forums how Korg ignored all that and made it clear that even an attempt to "Help" others regardless of them taking full control was a "no no" by them, sadly the message shown was "we don't want anyone to change our products because they are the best, some features in our products cannot be changed due to the way they have been designed, and this is the case even if you can show evidence that they can improve... regardless of how many customers feel (tough...!)... "
SeedyLee... I think you were missing the point, I don't like to respond that way, but frankly I've seen nothing from you saying (you tried helping at least, thanks mate, or something)... your posts were reading more-less stating: (what an arrogant person, I'm sure -Just like Mr. S- that he can never complete what he's promissing, and keep bragging about how he got in)...
Anyway, I am trying my best to no longer respond to posts now, as the more we go, the more negative it gets, ... let's just leave it at that, Korg don't like for others to work on their products, and I (we) have to respect their wishes, therefore, please keep the post positive and stop any negativity, after all they made a nice instrument even if it's not perfect yet, as I only intended to help and not to cause the opposite, and I hope I am making sense here...
Kind Regards

Hi Heider,
I'm sorry you thought my posts were negative or sarcastic - they certainly weren't meant to be, and I'm sorry they came across that way. I was very impressed by what you had achieved in such a short space of time. When I said "Is there anything you can't do?" it wasn't sarcastic, although in retrospect I can see how it might come across like that on a forum. I have a great deal of respect for your technical prowess.
I guess I was a little taken aback though by your optimism and certainty that you would have an enhanced version of the software out by the end of the year, even thought there were many things that may have precluded this - for example, a cease and desist letter from Korg. I have no doubt that your technical ability would allow you to that, but unfortunately it seems other factors outside of your control got in the way.
It's an interesting point about IBM. I also have a great deal of respect for IBM - when I was a kid I greatly wanted to work for them. But IBM is a big company with a lot of divisions, and their Australian division (IBM GSA) for example doesn't have a particularly good reputation in the industry and have been shedding staff drastically as they continue to lose lucrative contracts. IBM is not a company most people in the industry in Australia wish to work for anymore. This doesn't mean they're a bad organisation on the whole, just one small branch of them. I guess you could say the same about Korg - Korg UK may be a very different organisation than Korg US or Korg Japan. I think the reception you got from Korg UK support was crap to be honest, it doesn't mean that Korg don't care about your feedback or expertise, it's just maybe it hasn't gotten to the right people.
Oh, and I also quite like DB2 and am quite an advocate of it. It holds its own against Oracle with ease, and wipes the floor with MS SQL. (MySQL isn't even a contender here). But consider the licensing and support costs for Oracle/DB2 vs your KRONOS, and consider the difference in the response to your support/improvement requests
A big part of the reason I haven't continued with my exploration of the KRONOS is the EULA - I have only played around with those parts that aren't encrypted and don't require disassembly, even though I understand how to circumvent the encryption. But that's just me, I don't think I'd want to take the risk receiving such a letter from Korg. Also, I didn't want to take any risks invalidating my warranty - but after the warranty expires ...
I'm really sorry your promising efforts have been cut short. On the other hand, I think realistically there's nothing to stop you hacking around on your own - what Korg don't know won't hurt them!
All the best,
Lee

Dear Lee,...
I am glad you responded that way, hopefully, it's a good day ahead...
Just charging my camera and waiting for the family to wake up to head to central London today to start the big walk... it's a beautiful day, and hopefully we're having a good time...
Have a good day too mate, I am sure we'll talk later...

Just charging my camera and waiting for the family to wake up to head to central London today to start the big walk... it's a beautiful day, and hopefully we're having a good time...
Have a good day too mate, I am sure we'll talk later...

Hmmm, I don't have access to a laysec, but a Wii-joystick maybeHeider wrote:And,...

The Wii Joystick, and Laysec technology, and more products out there,... Never got hacked because they DO NOT use an open-source technology...

Btw, why would anyone want to hack a joystick?
Hi Heider.
I'm just after reading back over this thread and what you said KORG emailed you.
I'm quite surprised in what I read because you seem to have clearly misunderstood exactly what KORG said, and you are even now saying things that KORG never said at all.
Anyone else reading this thread would be very easily mislead by what your saying and I feel I must comment on this for your own benefit, and everyone who seem to be getting swept up in this.
I'm just being diplomatic here and looking at both sides of the story.
KORG were very specific in “““ONLY”””asking you to cease all activities which are in violation of the KRONOS software license, and cease all public or private communications related to this issue.
That's all. Nowhere did they tell you to stop posting “friendly messages” as you put it on KORG Forums or anything else even remotely close to that.
It's important you understand this because it seems to me KORG are trying to do you a big favour here and keep this very simple.
Nowhere in what you posted do I see KORG giving you false information or ever asking you to reverse engineer their OS.
I'm rather disappointed you would even say this as it's totally not true, and totally unfair to see KORG being miss quoted in such a bad way.
According to exactly what you said KORG emailed you, KORG actually only said this....

Sharp

KORG never said that at all. In fact you couldn't be more wrong.I don't see how Korg can even justify asking me to stop from posting "friendly messages" on this forum, I did state that I will no longer be posting about the Kronos's software, which is what I've done to protect their privacy and honor their wish...

That is absolutely not true at all.(Mr. S) has given me false information asking me to do the reverse-engineering and wishing me a good luck in doing that as an official Korg response to my question on the subject when I was in doubt to check.

That doesn't even come remotely close to anything your claiming they said. KORG did not give you any miss information, and they did not ASK you do reverse-engineering their OS. Surly you can see this.I personally think it is unlikely that you will be able to compile your own version of the KRONOS operating system but we wish you all the best of luck with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you cannot ask a person to stop to talk about a certain subject as long as it not violates laws etc. But that's exactly what they say in point 2, don't they? And the word "amicably" is hilarious when you read the rest of the text.To resolve this matter amicably, we request that you immediately:
1. Cease all activities in violation of the KRONOS software license, and
2. Cease all public or private communications related to this issue, including but not limited to posts on the Korg Forums, private messages ("PMs"), email, etc., with the sole exception of communications with Korg and its authorized agents, and
3. Provide a detailed description of your defeat of the KRONOS encryption measures.

It clearly says... “related to this issue”....
That's leaves no room to be misunderstood.
