There are now multiple videos of people changing e2 into e2s, and the OP has one going back to e2.
This is a big moment.

I'm on a works PC, so cannot access Facebook.
But yes, it's true and is reversible, there are videos on there by the guy performing the revert.
The hacked OS file is available to download on the page as well, somebody should link to it for those interested.
Don't think it has been attempted with the the ES2 to swap to an E2, but it seems most people are interested in having access to the sampler than the synth voices.

Yeah guys. Its true. And easy. And fast. And reversible. This night i have helped some guys in the facebook group to do that.
I will post detailed instructions later.
Im sorry to say that doing rhis with a black e2s to convert it to e2 will work but you will lose the waveforms. So little can be done for the sampler users.
The sounds are in the rom so everytime you load the hacked e2 with a sd card inside it loads your sample set of choice. I used electribesamplereditor to make new programs.
So if you load the sampler program withiut and sd card, it loads the original e2 waveforms.
You can modifiy the e2 os header to match the s2 firmware and go back home with your symth version.
Sorry for my english. Im from Barcelona and using a phone

Okay I took the jump. It works great!!
You can switch back and forth between the E2 and ES2 firmware within seconds from the memory card. Just make sure you have two directories under the main KORG directory.
One directory called "electribe" with the hacked E2toES2 SYSTEM.VSB file in the SYSTEM folder.
The other directory called "electribe sampler" with the hacked ES2toE2 SYSTEM.VSB file in the SYSTEM folder.
I've gone back on forth quite a few times with no problems whatsoever so I'd say to everyone nervous about bricking your electribe not to worry and just go for it

and the opposite?
from e2s to e2?
is it possible?
(I start to believe it...

There does not seem to be a rush of black sampler owners turning their tribes into the synth version. (Heck of an endorsement of the sampler or Early adopter blues?)
Anyway, someone will do it soon, just to be clever.
Korg really should capitalize on this with a unified OS, or swappable, or something. James Pullen was teasing a mystery earlier this year about the electribe becoming the "most moddable synth in history" or something, yet he seemed skeptical the surprised about the hack swap.
There was speculation a long time ago it was some simple header code hex edit that would unlock it. Will Korg hackproof these in the next firmware, or was this the plan all along - leave a backdoor open, get free buzz by proud jailbreakers?

I just tested my new grey ES2 and it samples and edits just fine. It seems to be fully functioning... if you can say that about the ES2
It's nice that you can swap back and forth within seconds and keep all your work intact.
