To address your thoughts: it baffles me why a DVD drive would be the necessary device when you look at the files stored on the disk. And though I don't think I will create any bigger problems, I'm not going to purchase a DVD drive. As you said in your post, there is no guarantee that any home fix will solve the issue so I'm at the point where repeatedly trying to contact Korg has yielded no response and I don't want to spend more time keeping my fingers crossed apart from the simple things I've done so to the repair center it goes.
To answer your question, it's been a bit of both. When I first opened the K up to check proper attachment of ram and cables I tested by turning it off and on about 10 times in a row. It booted each time and through the end of the day. I played some off and on and did a little recording, shutting down and rebooting over the course of a few hours. Different story the next day. When I attached the external HD on Friday I tested by booting the machine about 5 times in a row (on, boot, off, wait, repeat). The HD would spin but then the K would go back to boot fail. The only consistent thing is that whenever I did something significantly different - opened the machine or attached a HD - everything worked normally for a while. Who knows? Thanks for your ideas.
