To address your thoughts: it baffles me why a DVD drive would be the necessary device when you look at the files stored on the disk. And though I don't think I will create any bigger problems, I'm not going to purchase a DVD drive. As you said in your post, there is no guarantee that any home fix will solve the issue so I'm at the point where repeatedly trying to contact Korg has yielded no response and I don't want to spend more time keeping my fingers crossed apart from the simple things I've done so to the repair center it goes.

To answer your question, it's been a bit of both. When I first opened the K up to check proper attachment of ram and cables I tested by turning it off and on about 10 times in a row. It booted each time and through the end of the day. I played some off and on and did a little recording, shutting down and rebooting over the course of a few hours. Different story the next day. When I attached the external HD on Friday I tested by booting the machine about 5 times in a row (on, boot, off, wait, repeat). The HD would spin but then the K would go back to boot fail. The only consistent thing is that whenever I did something significantly different - opened the machine or attached a HD - everything worked normally for a while. Who knows? Thanks for your ideas.

Thank you for the information,I appreciate your response.
Regarding the need for a dvd player….I think it's because it becomes a boot device that the Kronos is set up to be looking for as a first routine scan and the factory dvds are written as such.
Anyway,I can understand why you have decided to go the repair centre route…there may well be something else causing the problem.

However, although you're not planning to purchase a dvd player, perhaps it will be worth doing so…??
A popular model is the Samsung 208,(I have one of those and it works fine),but there other compatible ones available at a reasonable cost.

Not knowing where you're located,I am surprised that you've not had a response from Korg Support…..Here in the UK they usually reply within a few days and can be very helpful.
There is a list on the Korg site that may provide alternative contact details for your area,or even the dealer it was bought from (if that applies…) could help.

I do hope you get it sorted.

Best Wishes.

Thanks Pedro. I live in New Jersey so the Long Island NY office is only a couple of hours away. To be fair my past experience was with Korg software and when I emailed they did get back within a couple of days. This has been several emails over the course of a month and a half and nothing, not even an automated reply that some companies do. Disappointing since with all the music companies I deal with email is their preferred communication. So please answer!!!
Anyway, I'll post again when this is resolved. I appreciate your time and ideas.

Sorry to hear you're still having problems.

Just for information, simply copying the files from the DVD to a hard disk will not work, as the MBR and partition structure will not be correctly created (the BIOS will look to a certain sector of the disk for information on how to proceed with booting, and copying the files only will not correctly create this boot sector). If you don't want to purchase a DVD burner, you can download the ISOs from Korg's website (somewhere) and use a utility to copy the ISO to a USB thumb drive. This should ensure that the MBR and partition structure is correctly defined, although I haven't tested it.

Beyond that, at this stage taking it to an authorised service centre is likely to be the only option, as unpalatable as that may be. There are a number of things that could be causing the issues you're having.
Current Equipment:
Korg Kronos 2 88, Reface CS, Roland JV-1080, TE OP1, Moog Subsequent 37, Korg ARP Odyssey, Allen & Heath Zed 18, Adam F5, MOTU MIDI Express XT, Lexicon MX200 & MPX1, Yamaha QY700, Yamaha AW16G, Tascam DP008ex, Zoom H6, Organelle, Roland J6 & JU06A

Got the same problem! How did you make out? Was it the ram, MB, Pwr Supply?

Thanks!
