KRONOS Upgrade
Moderators: Sharp, X-Trade, Pepperpotty, karmathanever
I finally did it!!!!
I did the same upgrade as our friend!
Bought the 'ASUS WL-330N3G' 6-in-1 Wireless-N Mobile Router and a 60GB SSD 'OCZ Agility 3'.
I had some trouble placing the SSD because the power cord in Kronos was a few mm sorter!!! So i had to put it upside down to again a few mm because the connections on the SSD are on the left.
Also the placing of the Router was a bit tricky, but i finally found a place for it!
See the images below.
Kronos has 3 free USB ports on the mainboard. I power the ASUS router with one of them and also connected the mainboard's Ethernet port with the router's.
To do that i had to remove the side plastic of Kronos, because the USB and Ethernet ports are not easily accessible.

The wireless connection is very easy.
First you must connect the ASUS router with your home's Wireless router.
Ones you do that, place the ASUS router in your Kronos and do the connections i described earlier. Now the Kronos is wireless connected to your home's router.
Use a FTP Client ( i used FileZilla ) and insert the IP address you find in KRONOS - GLOBAL - NETWORK Tab.
Sharp has a video showing how it is done. It is almost the same.

Korg Kronos LS & Kronos 61 v1 (both with same upgrades)
SSD1: 500GB (Samsung 850 EVO)
SSD2: 240GB (Crucial BX500)
Internal USB & LAN:
- Wireless Lan (TP-LINK TL-WR802N v4)
- Wireless USB keyboard receiver (Logitech)

SSD2: 240GB (Crucial BX500)

I thought of that too!Bart S. wrote:Did you realize, that the router is now blocking the air flow from the fan? I would rather put it between the SSD and the keybed.
Are you playing your Kronos live? From now on, you also need a firewall and anti-virus software
The router only blocks the airflow between the 2 hard disks.
The air flows above and beneath the router.
Also the router gets warm during operation. So the fan cools it down!

The router has a build in firewall and Kronos sets a password to the ftp connection.
Antivirus!?!!??! Let me see... Maybe i'll install Korgsperksy!!!!

Wifi router
Just wondering what is the reason behind installing a wifi router with the upgrade, is that part of the upgrade or a new idea by one of our members, and what does it do exactly?
Thanks in advance

xtatty, did you not like the way the router was installed as shown on pg 1 first series of pics to this post? That upgrader put router in FRONT of the hard drive bay not next to it I think. Trying to determine whether to go his route or your's....?xtatty wrote:I thought of that too!Bart S. wrote:Did you realize, that the router is now blocking the air flow from the fan? Re: Wifi router
The reason is that you can transfer files from the PC to Kronos and the other way around, just with a few clicks!subeih wrote:Just wondering what is the reason behind installing a wifi router with the upgrade, is that part of the upgrade or a new idea by one of our members, and what does it do exactly?Murad
Just open the FTP client and transfer them.
No more using a USB Memory or connecting an ethernet cable.
This was a member's idea (SynthKeyWizard).
It is not an oficial upgrade.
The router in the first post was installed in front of the hard drives. That member did that because he had a synth action keyboard.Synthmandan wrote: xtatty, did you not like the way the router was installed as shown on pg 1 first series of pics to this post? I have a Weighted action keybed. As you can see in my pictures there is not much space in front of my hard disks because the keybed's constraction covers a lot of space.
If you have a 73 or 88 Kronos this is the way to do it IMHO.
To tell you the truth i didn't measure the cable. It came with the router.
I tried it over the opened Kronos and saw that it was the right size.
However i did use a different micro usb cable than the one included in the ASUS packaging, because the one in it was a bit long.
EDIT
Here is another image showing the little space between the Hard disks and the keybed.
Also you can that there is an airflow from the upper and lower place of the router.

Same thing here, I have a WL330N that should arrive on Monday or Tuesday, so will also install it in my Kronos 73. Your pictures have arrived at the perfect time
By the way, the WL330N is the previous generation, called 5 in 1 because it can be used as router, repeater, etc. The WL330NG3 is now called a 6 in 1 because it adds 3G so you can use it with your mobile phone. So if anyone is looking to do this upgrade, buy the non G3 version and save some money. It's not like you're going to use your Kronos with your mobile phone !

I don´t understand why Korg did not buy a MB with bluetooth and WLAN onboard in the first place. Does only cost 5,- € extra and would make life so much easier from the beginning. Also the RAM and SSD restrictions were plain dumb.
Every upgrade decision that makes it necessary for the customer to send his Kronos to Korg and wait for weeks is a seriously dumb one.

This is specifically why I bought the non 3G version.Francois wrote:Same thing here, I have a WL330N that should arrive on Monday or Tuesday, so will also install it in my Kronos 73. Your pictures have arrived at the perfect time

It's not the cheapest solution, but already tested and works. So that's why I bought it. Not much more than the "official" method and it doesn't take up a USB port, and is a semi-permanent install and always available.Synthmandan wrote: Bought a used WL330NG3 over this Thanksgiving weekend for $25 complete kit off ebay... I could not find a used WL330N. New they seem to be 50 - 79 bucks.
Besides, I plan to use at least one USB port for a gooseneck light so I can actually READ the buttons under the top keyboard!
