Aren't the old G5's PowerPC? I have a couple of Mac Pro G4's at home and they have a dual core PPC processor. The Hz are a bit low but supposedly performance is better than an Intel of the same speed. It's difficult to compare entirely different chip architectures on their clock speed alone.
They are indeed, but my G5 was terrible for any sort of intense activity like video editing, even with upgraded RAM.

Age has nothing to do with build quality, seeing as it is purely a manufacturing thing and doesn't progress like computing power does. The HP Compaq series are business models where you end up paying for the quality of the hardware, not just buying the 'spec' in cheap flimsy plastic.
If you want an example of why laptops can be so cheap, look at the Acer models. They're a nightmare. In my experience they rarely last longer than the warranty period if you do anything other than keep them on a desk.
All I'm saying is that you have to put into consideration not just the spec, but the quality of the assembly and the materials used.
I still maintain that you'd pay the same money for a laptop of similar spec AND build quality.
It's all to easy to overlook build quality though because it can't be quantified like specs can.
And for a lot of people it doesn't matter because they're buying a laptop that is never going to leave the house or the office, it's just more convenient and takes up less space.
But for taking out on the road, to gigs, traveling, etc.. Either you've got to have something so cheap that it won't matter if you have to buy a new one, or you've got to get one that will actually survive.
Of course there is always money to be made by the manufacturer and the retailer. But I don't consider my Macbook nor my old Compaq to be less than good value for money.

I dont wish to continue this OT debate, but I will chime in on what X-Trade said about build quality. I have a MacBook that I actually spilled a cup of water on....as soon as that happened I immediately popped out the battery. The next day I re-inserted it, and everything worked perfectly. Somehow, I doubt something like an Acer or HP with lower assembly quality would have held up. You get what you pay for, end of story.

Oh, I'm not hating on Macs or their bad quality- I'm typing on a Macbook Pro as I speak- but when it comes to laptops there are a few brands of similar build quality PCs with better hardware for cheaper, and when it comes to desktops either building it yourself or using a service like iBuyPower is much better.
you could always patch your output or one of your oscillators back into the signal path and turn the modulation frequency up up up!
edit: but that goes back to what your using and what kind of glitch effects you want. Though if your sampling and you are using a midi controller try setting up your bpm to one of your knobs, could get a cool break like sound, kinda glitchy...
iZotope plug-ins. pHATmatik PRO and stutter edit in particular. Free trials for both on their website. Also try NI's free Skanner or any granular synth/sampler like Alchemy, or the upcoming Padshop. Boom!
