Hello. Thanks for your replies. I have opted for a Korg Prophecy- on it's way to me now- along with an ER 1k11

We use 2 EMX-1s and it's nice. We don't try to control one with the other though. Just sync them up, and we have one each. Lots of fun.
Korg Prophecy has a great sound. A pig to program though, but the results are well worth it.

I still don't see the need for two emx at the same time, for me at least it would seem to make more sence to "stack" them so you can have one of them control both to create some crazy wicked synth stacks......
let me back up and explain why I don't get it.... the electribe has sounds which take over a LOT of the frequencies, no matter how you filter them having even 4 synth parts playing at the same time creates music that is unclear and the sounds seem to overpower each other...
unless you use several of them for drums or for light background textures I can't see why? or perhaps if you have a p attern layed out across two electribes so you can play a whole song without switching patterns, which would also make sence but create havoc trying to remember every pattern
can you explain?

We spend a lot of time tweaking sounds to get them exactly how we want them. We layer and tweak, and layer and tweak.
Some of the sounds by themselves sound very thin and weak, but when they are layered with the other sounds they help build a complex evolving sound.
Sometimes we will duplicate patterns to 2, 3 or 4 other parts and change oscillators, filters, effects, envelopes, mod sources and pretty much everything else so that one sequence (pattern) is repeated with a lot of different sound sources. We can then, for example, use the amp knob to fade between them to create an extra layer or modulation to the one sound.
If you want chords, there goes 3 synth parts like that (duplicate and detune).
We run out of synth sounds and modulation sources pretty quickly on the EMX1's, and especially FX, and it's a really good way to work with another person. Even with the 2 EMX's we will dump down to HDD and add more.
For our studio stuff (as opposed to Live), the EMX's form only a small part of the overall sound, though we are using them more and more. We layer up the Kurzweil, the Ensoniq, the Virus, and the Waldorf and pretty much anything else we can get our hands on. Each plays their part.
The trick is keeping it all under control so that it doesn't sound like mush.
