You know you have a real analog when you have to press the tune button in the middle of songs! Shades of my Oberheim!

I wonder how these companies pull off the auto tune. Very cool!

So here's a question: is there any way to name a patch without just using the Program/Value knob? Is the latter a digital encoder knob (with the click points)?
I ask because I worry, over time, about wearing it out, constantly spinning it back and forth to choose letters to create a name for a patch.
I'd love it if there were some shortcuts (even a shift+Program/Value jumps to caps/numbers/lower case or something like that) either already there and undocumented (or that I missed in the manual? I don't think I did....), or that could be implemented, to make life a little easier on the Program/Value knob.
I'd especially love a key combination that would clear the name out completely so I don't have to erase the existing patch name as well, in the process of naming mine.
I want my Minilogue to last a long time.

I've had a device that uses a data entry knob for the same thing. I've had it sine 2003 and it still works fine. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

The worry about encoders failing is from a few shoddy parts choices on a number of models (EMX/ESX, Proteus line etc.) So it's a genuine concern, we just won't know for a year or so until it's actually a valid problem or not.

This is an analog synth!!! You know how it goes.... (or maybe you don't).
First it starts to go out of tune - no problem - just hit the tune button in the middle of songs and solos!
Then the programmer goes out (ala Oberheim OB-1). So what - just program it live!
Then the voltage regulator/power supply starts acting up and then pitches go all over the place.
Finally the EEPROM chip (that is impossible to find) dies and you are left with a shell of a keyboard.
Oh, then the capacitors start dying - get ready to solder!

Heh heh yep, am well aware! Part of the joy of analogue!
No idea even whether the encoder is "user replaceable" five years from now, I am happy to tinker, post-warranty, if possible (though I bet it's SMT so may just be unreplaceable, in which case, yes, all the more reason for Korg to think about the possibility of a software improvement that would reduce the amount of usage on the poor encoder, for all our sakes).
Not a big deal, just one of those little OCD things that wakes me up at night.

Most of it is analog, we can mod it

That's funny! Fresh off the rack and we're already talking about surgery!

Hi all,
I'm a guitar player, looking to add an analog synth. I have messed around with the microkorg in the past, but the menu system really wasn't a good fit for me. I love the knobs on this and the oscilloscope, I think these would really help me to learn about synthesis.
I don't know much about synth architecture and sound design though. I'm wondering if this would be a good choice for getting Boards of Canada-type sounds. I would also be interested in getting Arp2600-type sounds like on Kool and the Gang's Summer Madness (
http://youtu.be/AYOJX-fuKqM). If anyone would let me know if the Minilogue would be capable of getting these types of sounds I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

The first patch I designed from scratch on my Minilogue sounds very much like Boards of Canada. I've been trying to get their sound with VSTs for a long time and never quite could. It definitely has that slight analog oscillator drift which is so common in their work. I'm at work right now, but I can upload a demo of the patch this evening if you want.
The Minilogue is my first hardware synth, and I definitely feel like it's a great option. Having all of the knobs is very helpful for learning synthesis and sound design, which is one of the primary reasons I bought it. I was considering a Bass Station 2 before the Minilogue leaks, but as soon as I learned the Minilogue was polyphonic, I was sold. Bought one ASAP because I was worried they would all sell out, lol.

Here's a sample of the patch I mentioned:

Sounds BOCish to me. Has that slight movement to the sound. This is the Minilogue straight into Ableton, no effects or anything.

Brilliant. You nailed it. I see what you mean about the movement. Love that! Making me really want one of these! If It can get in the ballpark of the Arp lead sound I mentioned earlier or maybe something like the lead sound on Blow Your Head (JBs; James Brown) this thing would be perfect for what I want to do.

This shows some great sounds you can get out of it. These sort of electric piano tones really appeal to me:
