Ribbon controllers have been around for a long time. The earliest use of a ribbon controller seems to have been in 1928, on the Ondes Martenot. I haven't been able to find any ribbon controller patents. If there have been any patents in existence, they would have expired years ago.

As for aftertouch, a certain Donald F Buchla was the named inventor on a patent attributed to a keyboard with aftertouch, way back in 1985, which would have expired some years ago. The patent was assigned to Kimball International Inc.
