Hopefully there are previously made backups of the Programs, Combis, and Global settings to hand.

Try loading the data from the Preload disk XFD00P, to see if that cures the unwanted bass guitar sound.

Thanks voip: But it seemed to be a brain malfunction. I tried loading global (pcg) and it was still doing it. I thought I must have touched something and it changed everything. 2 hours on trying to figure it out and then I went to the computer and bwam, it hit me. I had a DAW open and set a vst track to bass guitar and it was set to record midi. Did I ever feel stupid and wasted 2 hours that I'll never get back. :^o

There are upsides :-) We've all done something similar, from time to time. It's a good exmple of the essence of experiential learning, plus it's been shared on here, so it may help others in the future. Sometimes these "creative mistakes" can lead to better things. That bass guitar might have actually sounded quite cool, in some instances, leading to another avenue of exploration or, indeed, a new signature sound, or even a new genre. Who knows? Have fun.
