Newbie Question for Combining Sets

Hi All,
I just got a Kronos v2 (2011?) and I'm new to it. I'm more familiar with the PA arrangers so this is why this question may be very dumb

I have a couple of different sets that I like to take some sounds from each and create my own. What is the easiest way about doing this?

With the PA, there's a PA manager. I'm wondering if there's something similar.

If I understand your question correctly, I would start by saving BOTH set lists that have the sounds you want to use to an available empty set list slot. After that start making edits by rearranging and cutting. Be sure to save your new set list before shutting down.

Is the question about Kronos' Set Lists, or the Pa series' Sets? The two are very different, and I'm guessing that the question is about the latter. In the Pa series, Sets are more akin to the Kronos' Combis, in that they contain information on the Timbres used, and how the Timbres are spread across the keyoard. In the Pa series, the user has the choice of using the Upper or Lower part of the keyboard, but in the Kronos, the key zones can be defined down to the key level for each Timbre. Backup files of the Pa's Sets cannot be directly imported into the Kronos, so Combis to your taste will have to be manually created. This can be quite a time consuming process, though using existing Combis, and adapting them to suit, can speed things considerably. Using the Kronos Editor software will probably help.

Sorry maybe I was not clear enough in my post.

I have 2 to 3 Kronos sets.
I like some sounds from each set. I want to copy some sounds from each separate set into a master set for me.

What is the best way going about doing this?

Okay, in addition to what I have suggested above, here’s another solution. Find a sound (program or combi) you like that is in a current set list. Select “edit” and tap COPY, then find an empty set list slot and tap INSERT, you must save the new set list or your work will disappear. Do this for every sound you want to create in your in new set list.

Some friends have sent me 3 different "overall sets" and I would like to take some sounds from each since I can't load and combine all 3 of them due to space.

You could try using PCG Tools to make your custom bank, as this would probably be the easiest and most efficient way of doing what you want. Have a look at the below link:

This is essentially a patch (or sounds) management program to make it easy to sort the .pcg files (I think you've been calling these "sets") that the Kronos uses. To be honest, I'm not sure how PCG Tools deals with third party / custom sample banks. It can all get a bit complicated with how the Kronos manages user samples. But do have a read of the documentation on that site. There is also a dedicated PCG Tools topic/thread here:

Sorry, but I started this reply before the previous posting had appeared. Hope it doesn't cause too much confusion, if I say that .PCG files don't contain samples, though Programs, Drum Kits, and Wave Sequences, defined within the PCG file, will contain references to samples, with the samples themselves stored elsewhere.

If the package that someone has saved actually contains a bunch of sounds, and samples, then it seems more like you're trying to combine Expansion Libraries of some sort. Could you give us some idea of the files that are present in these "SETS" - you don't have to be specific, but some idea of the file extensions might be helpful.

Here's an example of the file structure in a Kronos Expansion library, EXS12 Korg SGX-1 Austrian Piano, in this case, bought from the Korg Shop:

Or does the package contain files with .PCG and .KSC and/or .KGE or .KMP extensions, and possibly look like this?:

Or is it a file, or files, with .SNG extensions, which are Sequencer files, that are used to play Songs on the Kronos, and may be accompanied by directories containing .WAV files?

Or are they SoundFont files, with an .SF2 extension?

Is it space on the internal SSD in the Kronos that's running out, or are we talking about the available slots for Programs and/or Combis, Songs, or whatever?

Don't thank me yet. I took a closer look and according to the documentation for PCG Tools, the program doesn't handle sample management. The questions voip asked are highly relevant in order to help you figure out what to do.

So while you can freely move combis and programs around, you might have to leave some or all of the samples loaded for those combis and programs to work. Some of this will depend on whether the samples are custom user-created samples or EXs samples. EXs samples are Expansion Sample packs.

Now it may be that some of the sounds you want to keep for your custom bank don't use any samples and use one or more of the 8 EXi sound engines to create the sounds, or they might use the preset HD-1 ROM samples. In those cases, PCG Tools will certainly let you organize your programs and combis.

But it's difficult to advise you on what you'll need to do and how to get it done without knowing what you actually have to combine, as well as confirming what the lack of space is (sample RAM memory, disk, combis or programs slots?). Again, voip asked those questions above this post. And I'll repeat that sample management on the Kronos can be tricky to deal with at first.
