Mic Setup

Post by MyKorgPa5x »

I would like to take advantage of the Pa5x microphone effects and harmony capabilities but having a difficult time setting it up properly.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

See sreenshots below.

My issues are:

NOTE: I routed the Mic to Output 1 & 2 (separate from the rest)
  • I cannot get my voice to sound clear and proper with their EQ. I have no when mic is plugged directly into a mixer and fine tuning the EQ on my mixer but cannot get it to be clear and clean using the 5x.

I cannot find how to properly choose and set the Reverb , Delay, Flanger, Filter, Compressor and Gate.

I cannot find how to properly choose and set the Harmony to sound normal as a background to lead voice and to follow the chords.

I am not sure about the PA5x, but on the PA4x, I output my mic to OUTPUT 1 & 2.
On the PA4x, OUTPUT 1&2 are dry - no FX - but I can control some vocal FX using the Mic/Voice "DELAY/REVERB" knob.

If that is not enough, I fine tune my FX in Logic Pro when recording etc.... or externally on mixer....

From your images, it looks like the PA5x is a bit smarter...

Cheers

Thank you, galambjozsef!

However, it's definitely better but my voice is not clear. I don't know why but I have no issue when a mic is plugged into a mixer and speaker system.

I need more highs but feel something is just off...

Also, what other settings do I need to adjust?

Here you can find some presets that I rolled and used in previous PAs with almost the same values (I've been using this for several years, they suit me perfectly)

Hi galambjozsef,

Just saw this microphone thread. Is it possible to share your settings with me as well? I am going thru a few problems myself.

Sincerely,

Kauser

galambjozsef,

Thank you! You're so kind.

Definately sounds MUCH better! Thank you!!!

Questions:
  • What is the difference between the presets? (values and sound seems almost identical)
Why can't I control the "mic volume" using the "Mic" slider? The only way to control the volume is either to increase the gain (in the back) OR to use the main volume but then it increase the volume of everything.
Do you know how to setup the AutoPitch correction feature?
I am looking for a recommendation for a "soft" background harmony for specific parts of a song.
Was the file you provided originally a Pa4x file and converted?

Per Korg USA website:

Vocal processor preset compatibility
Q: Are the vocal processor presets from Pa4X compatible with Pa5X?
A: : Since the Pa5X contains a completely new vocal processor from Shift-Audio (the Pa4X vocal processing was handled by TC) the presets are not compatible. However, the effect modules inside the Shift-Audio vocal processor are similar, so you can rebuild the presets easily. In addition, the new SongBook conversion used in version 1.2.0 will automatically remap to the most similar presets in the Pa5X.

Hi, MyKorgPa5x!

The vocal presets were done by someone else, based on their own idea, just like mine, which I posted! The bottom line is that it's not your setting, that is, you have to adjust it to your own abilities and technical possibilities!
A lot depends on your own singing voice, your microphone, your mixer, your speakers, and the acoustic factors where you want to use it!

Settings cannot be converted by program or instrument
However, it is very easy to set up all of these, as the functions are almost the same.
I do that too!
I checked the settings on the Pa4x and set the same settings on the Pa5x.
All settings step by step (about 2-3 minutes if you want to go through and set everything) I myself only use EQ, Reverb, Delay and Filter, I don't need the rest, as I don't sing alone!
Some things are different, but these are rather new things that Pa4x doesn't know or Pa5x lacks!
(The only thing I missed was the DeEssert, but since I have a digital mixer, I set it there!)

-------------

Hy, KauserImtiaz!

Yes, I'd be happy to take a look.

Thanks a lot,

I totally get your point. Mic settings are dependent on many factors and preferences. I am curious to see some examples from fellow musicians for Pa5x application. Maybe I can find a few gems or clues to tweak my own settings. I am a stay home hobbyist and don’t interact with many musicians.

Might be a silly longshot question:

Is it possible to record my vocals using the Pa5x and then send the file to a expert sound engineer to make proper adjusts within the Pa5x and save it as a "Mic" user preset that can be sent back to me ready to import?

Does what I am trying to ascertain make sense?
