Battery low voltage error after battery replacement

Post by gminorcoles »

Hi,
I have a pretty new kronos 2. I started getting a low voltage error about the battery. I took it in to be repaired and after I brought it home I am still getting the same error.

I thought maybe it was the date and time settings but after I edit the date and time and restart, the voltage error comes back.

Has anyone had this problem? I found discussion of the fact that you have to hit enter to make the date and time changes stick but I did this and the kronos still says battery voltage error.

I sent an email to support but haven't heard back yet. What does a computer with a hard drive need with a battery anyway?

I would have done the same, edit the time to a more current date.

Did you save the change ?

I am not 100% sure, but I think the OS relies on steady clock time or the calendar. All the files have a date requirement.
The low volt battery allows that to update daily, while your K2 is powered down.

I would be surprised if your K2 Mobo needs that small battery.

The battery is there to keep the RTC (Real Time Clock) chip running when the Kronos is not powered, and saves having to enter the date and time every time the Kronos is switched on.

There is a chance that the replacement lithium battery was bad, or was badly fitted. The battery terminals and contacts need to be scrupulously clean, because the currents drawn by RTC circuits are so low, there is no arcing to break through and "clean" any insulating dirt or contamination.

that's a clearer explanation

Like you suggested, the small lithium battery may have gotten unseated during transport. Its visible on the moBo or circuit board and can be re-inserted.

If you paid a tech to replace the battery, take it back to them and have them fix it correctly. Maybe they didn't insert it correctly, or sold you a dead battery.

They should have checked and verified the repair.

My Kronos is one year old.
About six months ago I have the message about battery and I replaced it.
Now again, but this time after the battery replacement the "low voltage battery message" remains...any ideas?

Try setting the date and time, and then restarting the Kronos. If this doesn't work, try setting the time again, then writing the Global settings in the Global menu, before restarting. I'm not sure how the Kronos stores it's "system clock may be incorrect" flag that is set when the battery low message appears, but it is probably on the SSD.

Even though its a minor issue, relatively, my tech thinks I need a new main board.

I’m not a technical, but if it was mine, I would spend $5 for a new battery before swapping out a MB.

Suddenly after two error messages it works normal now.
No more battery error.
Thanks

what date did you decide on plus did you write/save that change ?

I have a $24,000 Rohde & Schwarz UPL audio analyzer that developed this problem last year. Changing the battery several times in the past year and it got to the point where the system would not even remember its CMOS config settings. So I leave the instrument on 24/7 now.

It is a motherboard problem and I'd wager the motherboard on the Kronos works a similar way. Once the CMOS memory starts to fail, it involves repair to the motherboard. If the Kronos' motherboard is as proprietary as the UPL, then we're pretty much stuck once the supply of replacement parts is consumed.

this forum is an excellent place to post on component issues.

Not to minimize any problem, I would like to believe the moBo problem is random.

We have folks running strong for 9 years on Kronos. We have Jordan Rudess stating his K is 100% rock solid for years. Including concert tours.

information and facts are our friends.

my technician is an ex-korg employee who say that this battery issue has like e a known service bulletin, and that the fix is not easy and it is easier just to replace the main board.

he already serviced it once and replaced the battery.
