Scratched Screen

Post by catthedd »

So...cat knocked over something which of course fell right onto the screen of the kronos (Gen 1). Nice big scratch / gouge on it now. It still works, but looks horrible. Any suggestions (beyond killing the cat)?

Its not your cats fault. And you keep objects that can fall on your keyboard ?

I keep a clear plastic cover on my Kronos

And I have 2 very curious cats

I think this is one for the service center

I mean that beyond everything, killing the cat is the best solution. I hope that someone from "Saving Animals" group don't read this.
Beyond the joke, I have a plastic cover too, over my Kronos, and I don't have a cats (maybe some mouse come in house and try to skating over my monitor, now he is forbidden to do this, maybe not?).

P. S. Excuse me for this jokes, I know, that's like me, Kronos is your most precious object in home, and that this result of yours nasty behavior cat, killing you!

Hah no worries. I have 4 cats and am incapable of harming a whisker. I'm badly allergic to boot!

Was hoping there was some sorta scratch repair stuff out there but it doesn't seem to be the case. I guess I'll just live with it, and get a cover!!

Yes, I am not aware of any ' scratch and dent ' repair for the LCD

A lady at a garage sale told me that I could spread peanut butter on scratched up Xbox games to fix them. I told her I had to have chunky peanut butter only ;)

so beware of strange ideas to fix scratches

Ouch, my sympathies. I try to keep the door to my studio closed to prevent the cats from entering, but none of that matters at this point since you already have a scratch.
If it indeed looks horrible and this happened to my K, I would probably try some jewelers rouge, or if you want to be less drastic something like toothpaste. You could try hand buffing, or if you have a dremel with a buffing attachment.
Try googling and youtubing scratch removal and read up on it.
Preferably find out what material the screen top is made of to get good and appropriate advice.
Good luck!

I applied a screen protector sheet for iPads on my Kronos' display. I can easily use the tip of my fingernails for drag and drop and scroll functions of the user interface without fear of scratching the surface. I know screen protector wont protect against heavy objects falling down on the screen but its better than nothing.

If you can acquire a replacement lcd screen, i'm sure its an easy fix. Look for posts with step by step guide to upgrading the SSD drive to get an idea of what the internal electronic structures look like. You should be able to just plug-n-play a new screen.

Unless, your Kron is under Warranty and you have no gigs coming up, just take to your local authorized dealer for repair.

When my cats were kittens, they would act like they wanted to investigate my studio.
When they would get to curious about my little studio space, i would spray compressed air.
They hated the sound of it.
My cats now come in my studio, and they set in my lap and lay around my feet.
But i have trained them to stay away from my gear.
I know they say you cant train a cat, but you can.
Just have to find something they hate and use it to scare them away from studio gear when they get to curious.

Flexible screens are coming out at least in the most popular screen based devices. Literally roll them up like a scroll to stow in a hard tube. Unfurl them or maybe even auto furl and unfurl by gesture over the scroll casing. Touch screen integration and all.
One concept demo i saw also involved really high definition images which kronos cannot support nor really needs.

But who knows, maybe one day Korg will roll out a 13 inch screen that unfurls from an internal stow through a slit on the surface. One that is the face of a flexible software system that can allow picture & video projects to run on board.

Touch screen that can roll up in a protected stow area away from goblins and bandersnatches.

Some youtube concept expo.

From what I understand,

the Kronos screen is in 2 parts - the LCD glass panel covered by a glass touch sheet.
I'm guessing the touch sheet is what is scratched, so may be a matter of just replacing that.

Markus Fuller on Youtube has a video on replacing a cracked touch screen which shows him bonding the new touch sheet to the glass lcd panel.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Zbi1g2kync

The video shows him dismantling the Kronos and the LCD screen repair is toward the end of the video. It may provide you with some ideas at least.
The companions I can't live without: Kawai Acoustic Grand, Yamaha MontageM8x, Studiologic Numa Piano X GT.
Other important stuff: Novation Summit, NI Komplete Ultimate 14 CE, Omnisphere, EW Hollywood Orchestra Opus, Spitfire Symphony Orchestra, Pianoteq 8 Pro, Roland RD88.
