electribe sampler MIDI controlling STEP BY STEP PLEASE?? SOS

Post by Duracell »

Hello everybody !

This is my very first post on this forum but I reckon I will be checking in frequently because I own some Korg gear and have decided to give it a go and start playing stuff live. I have to admit I'm a rookie n00kie n00b and I'm self teaching myself to understand the vastness of electronic music production.

So I bought the Electribe Sampler as a MIDI controlling solution, to sequence a couple of Volcas, a Microkorg and whatever comes next. I was also super interested in what it does by itself.

The problem is, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to control external gear. The manual is blurry on the subject and info online seems to be so straightforward that it makes me feel stupid. So here's what I've done so far, let's use the volca bass as an example :

1.- Set the volca bass' MIDI Channel to 1
2.- Choose an empty pattern on the electribe sampler
3.- Select Pad 1
4.- Set the Oscilator to Audio In Mono

And if I follow whatever information that has already been written online somewhere, THAT SHOULD BE IT. Although it isn't. No sound comes out of the volca.

AND if I press play the electribe will launch both it's internal sequence AND whatever 1 bar sequence is selected on the Volca Bass. So it's sending Clock messages.

Can any of you knowledgeable fellows provide a step by step guide on how to get both units to work together ? (and if you're feeling kind maybe throw some Microkorg tips as well?? haha)

Pretty Please !

Thanks !! :D :D

Ok so step by step guide:

1. Set the volca midi channel to receive on let's say 1 following these instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55m-m0NMDwc (that's on a Bass but it should apply to any of them, personally I have an FM and Beats and I can't remember if it's the same procedure)

2.connect midi OUT from the electribe to midi IN on the volca

3.On the Electribe make sure in the menu global parameter->midi send filter is set to off

And that's it, you should now be able to send midi messages from Part 1 to the volca.

Bear in mind that this way you're sending midi messages from the electribe to the volca but you still have the midi from that part triggering the internal oscillator as well, so if you want only the volca sound you can just turn the volume for that part down.

If you want the audio signal to go back into the electribe for filtering/modulations and whatnot you can connect the audio output from your volca to the audio in on the electribe and set the oscillator to Audio IN.

It's quite cool but if you're planning to control several units it doesn't really make sense.

THANKS !

I have some questions regarding your method :

Will it allow me to play the volca while on "Keyboard" mode on the Electribe?

Will it stretch the lenght to 4 bars on the volca too?

What happens to the internal sequence on the volca while it is being sequenced by the electribe ?

Love Burzum by the way, true and raw.

- Yes, you can play the keyboard mode, as well as the chord mode (midi channel target device must support polyphony though, AND the es2 voice must be set to poly1 or poly2 for this to work) and arp. Also, if you set the scale mode on you can even change the key, scale and chordset on the fly, and all will be transmitted from the sequencer as midi - powerful!

- You can sequence up to 64 steps with midi just like with the internal es2 sounds. However, the volcas only support 16step sequences with their internal sequencers. Usually you'd want to clear the volca sequences before sequencing them externally, in order to keep things simple.

- Nothing happens to the volca sequencer while it's being sequenced by the es2, that is to say, both sequences will trigger playback. That's why you generally only want to use either seq, not both (see above). You can record up to 16step long sequences from the es2 into the volca sequencer for some fun active step mayhem though!

Thank you so much to you two !

I finally got it working and I've been sequencing a couple of Volcas through MIDI and I feel like it's gonna radically improve my setup !

I also updated to the 2.2 software version and am now building way longer patterns through the Chain function, so I feel like the electribe is getting up there to where my needs are, this is exciting !

I have one last question, though.

I read somewhere that even when parts are muted, voice stealing persists.

Would this apply to parts that only control external device (OSC Audio Mn In)? could I make some voice space by replacing some 3 or 4 parts with external gear so that the internal samples and oscillators can run normally ?

Any thoughts on that ?
