Back in the 80’s I did both. I had a three tiered Ultimate Support stand and I would sit when I played piano and stand when I played the synthesizers higher up on the rack. Now that I’m older and carry much less equipment I decided to stand full time. It took a bit of time to get the feel for standing and playing piano parts. Standing can be hard on your feet for a long show.
BTW, I thought it was funny that other keyboard players get pushed to the back of the stage. I thought it was just me

Naaa! We all get pushed to the back of the stage. Gotta make room for the singer and their ego!
That video was hilarious!
I stand because I'm used to it. In the 70's I was playing a Fender Rhodes with a Roland String machine on top of it and to my right I had a Crumar Organizer with my Minikorg on top of that. It was a "L" shaped rig.

Yes (hope I don't offend someone). Only for drummers it is undoable to stand ... and one time I saw a piano player playing half bent down playing a real piano, but he only did it in a few songs (he was the front singer), Herman Brood for insiders.SanderXpander wrote:You probably mean playing while sitting down in a rockband looks stupid?

I have never stood. Way too much pedal and switch use. The only problem is that you are ear level with guitar and bass speakers. This can be loud! Maybe the guitar and bass players should sit so they can hear how loud they really are. Think about it; how many times have you heard FOH engineers tell them to turn down as compared to telling keyboards to turn up? Not that I use in-ear monitors its better, but in the day it was madness.

Please someone else raised this as I've been experimenting during our shows lately. For the pedal work I do it's much easier to sit down, but to join in the 'show' it's proved better to stand. The best compromise I found for both is a high folding bar stool where I can perch if I need to be doing lots of pedal juggling, or I can push it out of the way to stand.
I'm 6'4 and with standing I just have to be careful to have my Quiklok stand at the right height or else I wake up the next day with a bad back!

I guess I've just learned over the years how to work all the pedals while standing. My back mainly gets tired just from schlepping all my gear around. Life has never been the same since I dropped my Hammond on my roadie!

Funny you would say that because I’m in a band that can tend to play too loud. Typically the bass player tells me to turn up because he can’t hear me and I will say “or you can turn down”JPROBERTLA wrote:Maybe the guitar and bass players should sit so they can hear how loud they really are. I get that. Today at rehearsal I suggested that the 2 guitar players have their amps tilted back and in front of them. That way they could really see how loud they are. They looked at me like I had just grown another head! Our drummer complained they were both too loud. Mind you, he also said I was too loud because I'm the only one wearing ear plugs. I kept turning down but one of the guitar players kept turning me up at the board. 'nuff said!
