nanoKontrol2 doesn't work with cubase and ableton
Dear Korg,
Recently I bought the Korg nanoKontrol2 and after very much trouble I finally got it kinda working (that is to say, atleast cubase recognizes the device).
I'm running a windows 7 64 bit with cubase and ableton live 8.2.1 and I also have a Novation Launchpad connected (don't know if this is a problem?)
To make everything as clear as possible I'm gonna tell you what I did from scratch:
- First I installed the driver USA_DrvTools_e(1.14_r6), and the control editor USA_KontrolEditor_0130E.
- Then I installed KORG USB-MIDI Driver under start -> programs -> korg -> KORG USB-MIDI Driver.
Then nothing worked, so I uninstalled everything (and yes I had checked the limit of 10 midi devices in the registry).
- So I decided to look for help on this forum and I read that you have to install everything as if it where on a vista, so I did this (both the editor and the driver).
Now cubase recognizes the nanoKontrol, and it works, but it also works as a midi-keyboard (that is to say; every time I press a button like solo or mute I hear a sound from the vst I'm using). Also the faders act like modulation wheels, so every time I'm moving the fader up, I get a higher pitch. Someone please help me fix this problem, cause I can't even fade tracks properly this way.
Then the second problem; the Kontrol Editor still says the device is not connected. How do I get this to work?
Then my third and last problem; ableton doesn't recognize the nanoKontrol at all.
I have gone into the preferences, after I did the startup where you should hold down the Set marker and stop buttons while connecting your nanoKontrol to the computer, and chose mackie control and select nanoKontrol for the midi-ports, but still ableton doesn't show it as connected.

Same Problem
I'm having the same problem, except I'm trying to use the NanoKontrol2 with the Mixcraft DAW. Neither the DAW nor the Korg Editor will recognize a midi NanoKontrol2. I've installed all the correct drivers and software.
Please assist, jhart

Finally I got it to work, but it took some time.
I uninstalled all drivers from all audio and midi devices. When you've done this, then you should check your registry and delete all keys pointing to your hardware. I found Google to be a great help in this, because it depends on what kind of hardware you have installed. Restart, then install your Nano drivers first and then your audio drivers.
Hope this helps, would love to hear it.

Hi EmBee,
Thanks for the information. This is a LOT of work. I'll have to do some studying to figure out how to view the ordering of my midi drivers (I don't know how to do this) and how to view the registry and delete all keys pointing to the my hardware (I don't know how to do this either).
Thanks very much for the information and encouragement, jhart

I would like to view the video. However, I was able to consult with a technician at Sweetwater where I bought the nk2 and he used remote viewing control to operate my computer over the Net. He installed MidiOx to view the midi drivers in my Windows 7 Dell and then did go into the registry to make further adjustments. I'm now able to use nk2 with Mixcraft Studio Pro7.
Thanks again for your assistance, jhart

There's a video in YouTube explaining this. Will try tomorrow to find the link again, this should help you a lot.

Good to hear you can at least use the Nanokontrol in Mixcraft now. It's a pity quite a lot users run into problems with those units. You even had to accept remote assistance to let someone modify your computer and edit your register to get things work. Crazy, if you ask me...
Although it works with my gear now, it's not completely flawless. But this has more to do with the CC-style in Cubase and VST programs triggering unwanted playback of notes, than with the controller itself. Of course this is the way how midi-controlled units work, but it would be nice if I could work around this, without having to re-program the whole unit.

Thanks again, this is a very informative fixit video; it's amazing how many steps he packs into a short time. (I'm glad that I didn't need to go through all those steps myself because each one would take a lot of searching and fumbling on my part.) I believe Korg really needs to fix the midi limit glitch with an update, if they can, because not many customers will take the time to do the fix on their own.
