Deciding between KP3 and Pro or Pro Plus

Post by Mind Flayer »

Hi all - Happy New Year!

I am trying to figure out whether I ought to purchase a KP3, or a Pro or Pro Plus. My current rig consists mainly of a Roland Aira TR-8, a microKorg, and a Sub Phatty. I don't usually play through a computer or DAW - I record most of my stuff into an 8-track.

I'm looking for something with great on-the-fly looping capabilities. I like to mostly improv, so I'm not as interested in using pre-recorded stuff. Real-time, seamless looping is what I'm after.

What I'd like to do is loop the audio from my instruments via the Kaoss pad on the fly. E.g., as I'm playing, I'd want to record a bass line from the Sub Phatty, loop it right then and there, then record a loop from the microKorg, then maybe change the bass line by recording another loop and having that one take over, etc.

With this in mind, what would you recommend? The KP3? The Pro? The Pro Plus? Which one has better on-the-fly looping capabilities?

Thanks!

I would suggest the KP3 if you are limiting yourself to the list you gave.

Keep in mind all of these korg units only have 1 line in jack (stereo), so you will need an external mixer to record multiple instruments at the pace of a concert / improv session unless you want to unplug and plug different instruments into the korg unit one at a time. The Pro and Pro + specialize in sound synthesis. If you want new sound modules and want to incorporate the voices you hear in the demos of them online into your sound, then you will want the pro / + and not the KP3. Both The Pro and Pro + do have sampling capabilities but are not as dedicated to this function as the KP3.

The KP3 has a few (but very limited) programs to actually make sound with. Instead of sound synthesis programs the KP3 has lots of effects modules and sampling capabilities. From your description it sounds like you are happy with the sounds of the instruments you already have, and want to focus on combining those sounds in a unique way which is what the KP3 would be best for.

Make sure to research thoroughly before buying in any case

Agreed with above. The KP3 is a good looper. I record keys and decks into them live and they're great for vocals /ambient noises too and they have lots more effects than KOpro. You could buy a cheap Kaoscillator 1 if you needed more synth. I use two KP3s and they stay locked in time together for 8 loop banks.
They dont stay locked to other midiclock sync signals very well though and will drift from an external synth arp or drum machine after 5 or more minutes.(not stable with other clocks ,but fine on there own). Not a problem if your just jamming live into them and a highly satisfying way of making music.
(There is esoteric work arounds for above problem).
