How to Update my Kronos with new organ bank sounds
Hello Folks,
I have two questions about updating with the new free sounds that Korg has made available.
1. Can you update the sounds by plugging the Korg into my computer (I've already got the computer set to recognize it) or does it need to be done with a flash drive?
2. Does anyone have a step-by-step list to follow that is better than the one on the website (because I followed those steps and it won't update - see my earlier question about this in the thread link below, to which no one responded). Or can anyone point me to a Youtube video on it? Korg's youtube channel does not contain anything.
Thank you in advance!

As far as I know, the instructions are correct. I wrote them, and will be happy to revise them if necessary. From your original message, my guess is that your USB stick is the problem. I would suggest that you re-format it in the KRONOS, and try again.flemmings27 wrote:Hello Folks,

Hi Ed,
Thank you for the reply! I did the updates (OS and firmware) several weeks ago when I first bought it. I'm trying to load the 2 new sound banks they made available - the CX-3 Signature Sounds and the Organ bank. The instructions provided to do that say to use a flash and when I followed the steps in the file, I encountered the problem listed in my previous thread. As you can see, the author of those instructions has replied, but I have no idea how to use the Kronos to re-format the flash drive (that's not in the manual anywhere), and I'm not sure why it would be the flash drive when it is brand new and it worked fine when I updated the firmware and OS with it. I'll try to send the sounds over from the computer, although I don't know how to do that. I presume it's in the complete operating guide?
Thanks again.

I find the PDF "search" function to be helpful.
You're seeing file errors. The most likely cause of that is that the flash drive is problematic. A secondary possibility is that the download is bad.flemmings27 wrote:and I'm not sure why it would be the flash drive when it is brand new and it worked fine when I updated the firmware and OS with it.
USB flash drives seem prone to errors, regardless of the platform. (I just bought one on Amazon yesterday, in fact, and even the good ones all had a number of 1-star reviews from people who complained that the drive had failed quickly.) My guess is that this is due to a combination of factors, including disconnecting the drives from the computer before file operations are complete (easy to do with a USB stick), rough handling, perhaps static shock, etc. So far, every complaint that I've seen about problems with files on USB flash drives has been solved by re-formatting on the KRONOS.
(Formatting on Mac OS X will also work reliably. Windows Explorer will work in most cases, but will sometimes maintain hidden partitions which can be confusing; third-party Windows utilities can be used to fully format drives including hidden partitions.)
I'd suggest:
* Format the USB drive, either in the KRONOS or on your computer. Try the installation procedure again.
* If the above doesn't work, download the file again.

I just updated to version 2.1.1 on Sunday, I was reluctant all this time to update fearing I would encounter problems but it all went smoothly and the new sounding C3 is impressive. I also loaded one of the new bank of sounds.
I only found one line of the instructions a bit confusing of which I had to read a few times before I understood it, that being, that all the files in the main folder had to be saved to the usb, and not the main folder itself that these files sit in, and before the main folder you have the zip folder.
Anyway all went smooth for me...pheeeeww
Regards
Billy

Happy to help (if possible) - just so you know during the last update, I actually had issues when my USB was formatted on the Kronos and for grins I formatted it on my computer and tried again and all was perfect.
So.. that isn't always THE answer. If you already did the update it would seem your USB was formatted just fine.
I would say - format the drive. Re-download the files. Make sure everything is fresh and tasty (yea, basically what Dan said, but I figure downloading is easy and why not get everything all proper!)

Thanks to Ed, Billy, and Dan
Perseverance paid off. I wasn't completely sure how to use the Kronos to re-format the flash drive - I think I saw how, but just didn't want to accidentally re-format something in the Kronos, so I bought a new flash drive. With it, I finally was able to get the FACTORY-V2 new sounds in - or at least, all looks well. I punched in some of the numbers on the Internal and User banks and they match the Voice Name list for those.
Since I have not yet created any of my own sounds or saved anything, my Kronos is factory set, but with the new V2 sound bank. Now, I would like to upload the two free KRS-06 libraries (the CX-3 and the Bonus Organ Bank), but I'm not sure how to do that. I'm assuming that it is the appropriately-named PCG files in each of these downloads that will actually contain the sounds that I need to load? The next question is, I assume I go through the same basic initial process, but when it gets to the point of where you're on the pre-load page and you can see the drop down box for PCG Contents, which has the default of "ALL" in the rectangle, what should I select? One of the other user banks with free spaces?
Help appreciated!

Don't take this personal, but it sounds like you need to crack the manuals & watch some YouTube videos. I will go out on a limb and say you are new to Korg products as well as their workstations. Most of these operating procedures & features have been around since at least the Triton. as far as manuals go the Quick Start and Operations Guide (OG) are your best bet. Be sure to do the procedures in the OG and you will get more familiar with Kronos. Then you won't be so worried about formatting the wrong drive. You will also be able to frame your questions more precisely and accurately.flemmings27 wrote:Thanks to Ed, Billy, and Dan

Don't take this too personally, but did you hurt yourself when you went out on that limb? Last time I touched or owned a keyboard was a Korg DW6000 in 1986-ish, and I'm on the noob forum. I read both guides and took notes before I even bought the board, and checked them before I asked the question. The Quick Start is exactly what the title says it is, and says nothing about the question I asked. And the question, if you can read English, is fairly straight forward and accurate. It's asking for clarification for whether "All" should be checked in the PCG contents, as the examples cited in the section in the an issue in which I already checked the OG, in the section that starts on pg. 181, but which provides only two examples, neither of which are sound libraries, and what it does say in its example is "in this case, check All" with no explanation as to in which cases one should check something else or definitions/examples of in what cases one might want to use those other options. I'm glad you indicated that Operations Guide is OG, otherwise, I might have thought you meant Original Gangster. As for Youtube, went to Korg's official channel and a search there, using the terms "Loading Sound Libraries" turned up nothing. And with the expense and complexity of this instrument, I'm not going to watch something that Joe Keyboard player from where-ever America posted on his/her own personal youtube channel or do something on my own that will cause unnecessary time and pain to undo. Aside from having owned a Korg a few decades ago and having been very pleased with it, one of the reasons I wound up making the selection I did from among the workstations I was researching was this generally friendly and responsive board. In short, I checked before I asked, but still wanted to ask, and didn't count on getting some condescending tripe from someone who has nothing better to do than suggest the obvious under the ostensible pretext of providing help. Methinks you are the role model for every keyboard player joke I ever heard--there are kernels of truths in stereotypes. Is that precise and accurate enough for you?

i don't think it's needed to overreact this way, it will stop people trying to help you.
The Operations Guide is to help you get started, but there is a lot more indepth information in the Parameter Guide about the topics. In this case your questions are quite well explained in the Parameter guide in the Section: Disk: Page Menu Commands.
For instance the ALL question is explained in the section:
Parameter Guide -> Disk: Page Menu Commands -> Load Selected -> Load PCG
There you can read in two pages what is loaded and when it's loaded.
But to save you some reading (explained in my own words):
when selecting the ALL option then it means that everything in the PCG file will be loaded on the default locations as defined the in PCG file.
So for instance, say you have downloaded a Sound Set that has the following content:
- PROGRAM bank U-C (127 programs)
- PROGRAM bank U-F (127 programs)
- COMBI bank U-A (127 combis)
Now when you select the .PCG file and press Load with ALL enabled, the program bank U-C, U-F and combi bank U-A will be overwritten with the sounds in the PCG file.
Now if you don't want that you can also select the PCG file and press open instead of Load. Now you will see the tree structure in the PCG file:
Program U-C
Program U-F
Combi U-A
If you now select for instance Program U-F and then press load you can load only that program bank from PCG file, you will get a dropdownlist where you can select a different Program bank target location. So in that case you could download for instance Program U-F from the PCG in Bank Program U-G (if thats the one you still have available).
Last but not least:
When you load sound sets that use the internal synth engines or sounds from the kronos, it's even possible to audition sounds from the PCG file without loading by pressing OPEN on the PCG file and press OPEN again on the PROGRAM U-C bank again. Now you will see all 127 sounds. Select a sound without loading it and you can play it to see if it's something you like. You can even load one program to a location in your kronos this way by pressing the Load button.
So basically that's all there is to know. It's much better explained in the parameter guide but these are the basics.
Hope this helps you getting started with the proces.

Apology accepted. It didn't hurt my feelings; I was standing my ground to a post that said "do your homework before you waste anyone's time with a question that everyone should know b/c the method of operation for this has been around for 15 years - you must be a noob."ronnfigg wrote:So you did take it personally. Thank you for this very helpful response! I did not think to look in the Parameters Guide when trying to solve the problem, largely because for the instruments/effects that are my main forte, those guides contain not much more than frequency responses and electrical schematics. I'll use that in conjunction with the other guides from now on.
The first point in your post is well taken, but I don't consider my response over-reaction, but standing my ground to someone whose post said "Do your homework before you get on this board and waste anyone's time with a question that everyone should know because the underlying system for this has been around for about 15 years." If that's all you're going to write as a response, why write in the first place?
Thanks again.
