Any updates still coming, or was this all that they got?

Post by Link »

Sorry for irritating tone; I'm still a Korg fan, and I view Kronos as best value and top quality synth on the market, but it has one or two odd omissions in it.

I was certain, that Korg would introduce a big update for Kronos last Namm, but got a little worried, as nothing has happened for a long while. Things take time, but its starts to be 3 years old device already...are they skipping this and make a completely new synth? Or is it hardware extension?

I thought, and I was 100% sure, that a sequencer would at least be updated with touching M3 like features rather soon after its launch, but they made a cheapo synth with such functionality instead!!!

Touch screen knobs would be another no-brainer, but where are those!?

Karma editing on the device it self!?

Perhaps something interesting, like hand drawn waveforms and envelopes for taking something positive out of the other wise unpopular choice of the touch screen technology.

A new engine or two, even if you would have to pay for them(I would actually welcome such business model) would not be 100% necessary obviously, but they would certainly increase interest towards the device and make it seem like Korgs synths are perpetual consciousness expanding machines.

Kronos doesn't need many new kinds of engines of course, it has already almost everything, but for example a V-Synth like sampler would save me 3000€. And who wouldn't buy new engines, even if they would be a bit on the overlapping side, like MonoPoly etc etc.

I have heard, that Moss is impossible. What about Moss 2, or big updates for existing engines?

Those features may very well be given at some point in a future workstation. But it will not be added to Kronos.

I agree. Korg is likely well on the way to developing a next gen Kronos.

The technology/power/Unix programming of our current Kronos' is 4 years old. From a factory/company perspective I don't believe they would make a major retrofit of the Kronos today.

Pretty sure I have seen Stephen Kay say this is never going to happen.

In my opinion, there´s only a very few things, which would make sense to be implemented to Kronos:

- A brass engine, like they have DNC in PA3X
- Korg M1 module, or even better: a complete VST(i) Host
- Piano roll editing for Sequenzer
- Ability to change setlist slots up AND down at the same time, whether by footswitch or midi CC...

For me this would be absolutely all !

...so, considering Kronos is a relatively small update to Oasys, or repackage actually, we might see next workstation soon...

I'm pretty sure he didn't say never. I don't expect it though.

I would be happy to pay for new guts and keep my board as updates software or hardware are implemented. I mean why not, recycle the old case, control, keyed, I am even ok with the display although a kit to angle it a bit would be nice. But truly putting a new processor in based on the existing physical case and controls would suit me fine.

I actually think there will be an update but only for a few niggles still pestering people, maybe a nice tweak here and there, but nothing to major.

I want the the Kronos soul in the OASYS body. Plus a few more synth engines and some more knobs and sliders.

I am fortunate enough to live in an area where only the cheap entry level synths are sold. I have never ever seen or touched a synth nicer then the Kronos. Naturally this means it is the bees knees to me. I have no point of reference of better, in the synth build quality world.

Almost lost my tea through my nose with that one.

Sure, it's an evolution of the OASYS, just as most products evolve from previous work. But, "repackage?" Seriously? Multicore, SST, SGX-1, EP-1, virtual memory for samples, Set Lists, User Sample Banks, etc., etc...that's a lot of new stuff, and a whole lot of work, for a "repackage."

We all have different things we'd like to see in an update....About the only thing that would excite me would be more synth engines like the AI/2, Hi, etc (Trinity or M1 or Triton)...And more banks to store the new sounds in.Honestly though I'm probably just going to pick up a few used rack modules on Ebay over the next year or 2 instead of waiting for something that was:
1- Never promised or
2 - Probability of happening - Never.......
I'm sure there will be more updates but who knows what they are working on?....I sure don't....

At least I can get some good prices on the used modules I want and it won't take away any resources from the Kronos to run them....The main thing is don't wait for them to do updates to do what you'd like to see Kronos do if it doesn't already....That will just make you unhappy when it doesn't happen....Make it happen for yourself and move on...That's what I've learned to do.....moon

Well, now that we know, that you drink tea and that you have a nose as well, how about a small statement concerning the update strategy ?

I suppose since Kronos is computer based and modules are purely software based, it is not at the end of its possibilities, yet...!?

Yeah...sincerely sorry about that. That was a nasty thing to say, especially in some ones "home". I was in a bit of an irritating mood and wanted to be slightly provocative, but repackage went too far.

I think, that some of those bullet points are kind of small things and fattening the list of "why the Kronos is not an Oasys repackage" in vain though.
