Now I've got a Kronos... What do do with the Extreme...

Post by adamburgess »

Since the Extreme forum is a lot quieter than here, all suggestions welcome about what to do with the old Extreme... Don't mind silly ones either!

Recently bought a Kronos to replace my aging Extreme. Got an early one (000921) and it's had none of the problems mentioned here like buttons not working, dodgy jacks, cutting out notes etc etc but... after years of me (with my not so subtle touch) gigging it, throwing it in backs of old vans, it being treated badly by airline crew and my own repairs haha, it now

Has a broken touchscreen (my fault changing the 12 broken keys around to one end.)
Has seriously dodgy end cheeks (general weak point, it seems)
Has 12 broken keys and a few broken key contacts.

It's paid for itself many many times. Not worth fixing an 8 yr old machine for what it would cost. cant really sell it. Shall I throw it in the skip/dumpster/rubbish/trash or anyone got a wacky idea. All the connectors are fine and still love the sound and wonder if I can coax enough out of it MIDI wise without using the screen...

It's also a great shade of glossy white... Got bored of the blue!

Here in California, we recycle all electronics since we are careful about what goes into our landfills.

You could garage sale it for parts only, noting its not a functioning board
without the LCD.

put it on Ebay as is (perhaps for parts) - Start the bidding @ 99 cents + real shipping. Whatever it's worth, someone out there will buy it. Either way, you're saving it from the landfill and not out any real hassle/cost.

I know a guy who gigs 3 nights a week with a Triton Pro - Last year he bought 2 spares, one working and one broken as backup and for parts. I'm sure there are guys out there doing the same with an Extreme.

Yes, Greg. I didn't mean literally just put it out for the trash man ;-) I would recycle it as well as I could. I know Apple have people in the Middle East doing that - so presume my local Korg man could maybe sort something.

Don't think there's a market to sell it for parts or what ever here in the UAE. The shipping of it anywhere would be a waste of money, I think.

Having never really used it with a computer much (it took long enough for me to figure out the .midnam thing with ProTools!), that's why I was asking whether the MIDI spec could compensate for the lack of screen...

I could keep it as an FX unit for the couple of songs I'm playing guitar on on this gig maybe... 'Cause the white does look pretty good under the lights :-)

I dunno - I'm thinking "Recycle the old beast" it is then!

Seems like the parts are still available:

The touchpad is not that expensive, if the screen is ok:

Regarding Ebay, you might be right, but it doesn't hurt to just toss it up there for a week and see what you get. You only have to pay for the listing if you sell it. Who knows, maybe someone will take it off your hands for $50. As long as they are paying for whatever the shipping is, who cares? You just made $50 (or Dirham).

I fixed mine by simply peeling back the top sticky bit until it was almost completely off them pressing it down again. Went from not working at all to being the most sensitive/responsive its ever been.

Contacts cost next to nothing

Keys, could cost around $10 each, but I'm, sure you could get them cheaper if you asked a spares company nicely, especially if you want a load and they're second hand keys.

I've got to sell my Extreme on order of my wife (part of me being allowed to get the Kronos) but given the choice, I would have kept my extreme (with MOSS) and used it along side my Kronos

Just found something, that might help you:

seems like superglue works for the keys.

Don't throw it away. I would take it, before you do that...

Well, regarding the screen. It is the part with the really tiny flat ribbon cable that is broken. The screen itself lights up fine and will respond with the cable pushed in place occasionally but it's too damaged to glue and won't solder to plastic ;-) I dropped the screen putting it back together after shifting all the broken keys up to the top octave and caught it by the cable !argh!

The contacts would need a whole section replaced as far as I can see. I'll see if I have a pic. It's in storage at the moment.

Gimme a PM if anyone would like to sort shipping from Dubai to wherever

At a gig and just on my phone so I've put a little photo on FaceBook. Everyone should see it.... I'm Adam Burgess and my cover photo has the white Extreme on top with the Nord thing underneath. Have a gander :-)

As I said, I'm willing to pay the shipping to take it. But maybe I've another idea, that you like. Are there local music schools, where you are? Maybe repair it at bit and give it to them, so they can teach kids on it? Maybe school have enough money to buy better instruments there, so it's just an idea...

btw: I did not know, that there are so many Adam Burgess on facebook, who make music...

Here's the picture:

And I think the white looks really good... :)
