Kaosillator 1 or 2

Post by EdgeoftheCity »

SO:

I just bought the Kaosillator, after salivating over it for a couple years, only to find out they released its sequel this year.

So I need to know, what do you guys prefer?

Would you return the Kaosillator to get the Kaosillator 2?

I think it's better to leave the KO2 aside, or consider it an immature gadget.

So you'd really go with the KO1, given the choice?

Just for reference here, I'm an independent musician, and am getting the KO to use in my own music. I don't intend to use the KO to create entire songs - just to 'fill out' preexisting ones.

As the guy who started this topic and had a lot of misgivings about the KO2, well all I can say is that I've been completely happy with mine.

Recently had the chance to play around with the KO1, and I think everything about the KO2 is better and more user friendly.

The only advantage I see with KO1 is the build quality.

The KO2 is fragile, but not like it will just fall apart. The fact that it's built like a cellphone makes people want to just stick it in their pocket or something. Don't do that, it can't take it.

But it is portable and you can do amazing things with it.

That the KO2 displays the note you are playing, and you can actually see what FX setting you are on makes it 10X better to me.

The 16 step and undo on the original are nice, but of marginal use to me. Edge of the City, if you plan on using it to flesh out existing songs I get the impression that you'll be playing it "live" over what you already have? In that case, 16 step and undo will be of no use to you. Those are only of use for constructing a song on the unit itself. So the lack of that on the KO2 will make no difference to you I think, that is my experience.

So if you discount that, the KO2 is superior in every way.

Also if you are planning to construct songs on the KO2, the two tracks, ability to import sounds through the speaker (primitive as it as), and the ability to fade in and out between the two tracks to me trumps 16 step and undo on the original.

KO2 all the way. Not to say that the original isn't a nifty and very cool device!

I just got a KO2 to play around with and find it very amusing. OK, it's built cheap and has a lot of limitations but its a fun toy.

I only wish there was a little better file management with saved loops but its really a scratch pad device and it's easy to reformat the sd card and clean everything up.

So no ... the KO2 is not really that bad given it's cost and place in the scheme of things.

EDIT: Get an A/C Adapter or battery costs will kill you.
