Some basic questions ?

Post by may1620 »

Hi,
I am very interested in possibly purchasing an SV-1, and came across the forum - very helpful! It's particularly good to read up on shortcomings that many have experienced.
I have a few basic questions, if you'll indulge me.
1. It looks as if some of the early reviews were not at all impressed with the Organ sounds in the standard Soundpack. It's subjective, of course, but would you say these have been improved upon with the 2 later Soundpacks? I am particularly interested in the Vox Continental.
2. I just watched a demo of the procedure for downloading a Soundpack and sending it over to the SV-1 - basically replacing what was there. Is it the case then that you cannot have all 3 Soundpacks on board at once? And if your 3 favorite Sounds happen to come from the 3 different Soundpacks, can you have all 3 on board at once? Maybe as favorites? To that end, can you simply construct your own custom Soundpack 4 from the various Patches and your tweaks?
3. I downloaded the dis-assembly pdf, and of course it looks a little daunting. Has anyone out there actually managed to replace their own tube? I just don't particularly relish the idea of being forever dependent on repair shops/techs for basic things like that. Especially if they aren't interested in working on it!
4. Any sense of what's coming next/soon for SV-1? Looks like I just missed a big rebate period, but now there is a price reduction and a retro reverse key edition. I'm just trying to guess if the model is on the verge of being eliminated, in favor of a worth waiting for SV-2, or nothing.
Thanks in advance . . .

I like the Vox Continental sound in the original sound set. It's cheesy, and it's got that Elvis Costello and the Attractions bite.
But I never owned an original Vox Continental, so I'm sure someone else will come along and explain it's shortcomings.

You cannot have all 3 Soundpacks at once. There are only 36 memory slots + six favourites. The favourites are separate sounds, and can be a standard sound from one of the memory slots, or a customised version of the sound (e.g. with different effects) or a completely different sound from one of the other Soundpacks). Yes you can mix and match sounds from each Soundpack, but it does require a computer.

Can't comment on your other questions.

I'm not into Vox sounds so I can't speak to them, but in general the organs sound fine to me.

I think most people were expecting the SV1 to compete directly with the Electro, which is one of the best organ modelers out there. It can't stack up to the Electro's organs but if you compare it to other non-clonewheel organs the SV1 isn't horrible.

The best thing you can do is demo it yourself.

You ask about the future of the SV1. I have no idea of course but here is my collection of somewhat random thoughts on the subject. Korg has left me somewhat puzzled about the SV-1 after the NAMM show.

1. You mentioned a price reduction. And you are right, on the Sweetwater site, the new SV1 keyboards announced at NAMM (the all black and reverse color versions) are indeed less expensive then the original red and black (Sweetwater calls it the brown keyboard). Not sure why 2 new limited versions of the exact same keyboard are lower in price but I am not in marketing so maybe I am missing something.

2. I took the very large rebate ($500) offered on the SV1 classic that ended right before the NAMM show as a sign that a new or updated SV1 was coming. The two new cosmetic models are cool but not a big deal and certainly not a big change or improvement.

3. There is a lot of talk over on the Kronos thread about the problems and the just announced fix to the RH3 keyboard issues, which I believe is the same keyboard used on the SV1. Word is that all new RH3 keyboards for the Kronos will include this fix to the RH3, which many of the Kronos people have been raving about as being much better then the original RH3 keyboard. So I would like to hear something from Korg that confirms that the new RH3 keyboard will be used on all new SV1 starting on some date or serial number. That would at least be something new and improved.

4. Looking ahead to an SV2, from searching online it looks like the original SV1 was introduced in September 2009 (correct?). If so, does this mean that Korg has in the past introduced new or upgraded keyboards outside of the winter NAMM shows? I am just hoping that I dont have to wait one more entire year for the upgraded SV1. Curious if anyone knows if there is a pattern to when Korg announces new or upgraded products?

5. A couple of days ago Rich F announced on the Kronos forum that a new and exciting upgrade to the Kronos OS with lots of cool features is in the works. It would be nice if a similar annoucement could be made for the SV1. New OS?, new sound packs? new and improved keyboard? anything planned for the SV1? I know they cant announce new products but a few hints cant hurt.

I think the SV1 is a perfect complement to the higher end Kronos. I hope that Korg plans to upgrade the SV1 and that we dont have to wait an entire year to find out. I am worried that the flagship Kronos may be sucking up all the Korg engineering and perhaps not leaving any left over for the SV1. If so, would be nice to know this upfront.

Anyway, these are just my collection of random thoughts. I really love Korg and I appreciate how they seem to listen to their customer concerns and respond. I want to give them my money for an upgraded SV1 or SV2, hope its in the works sometime soon. I am reading tea leaves but I feel in my gut that some upgrades are coming (at least hopefully the new RH3).

My one cent (not even worth two).

Yes, the RH3 keyboard is used in the SV1 and I really do not understand what all these people are complaining about. I just love it! It has a fantastic action.

I think there is little to improve concerning the SV1. So why do you want a SV2?

As far as I have heard, the SV1 was designed by Korg Italy and the team developing it is a completely different team than the developers of the Kronos.

The SV-1 was a flop. Less than 1,000 were sold.

Wow, thats really disapointing since its such a great sounding keyboard. Are you sure about the numbers? Do you have friends on the inside?

Any thoughts on what is next for the SV1? (or is that it). Do you think Korg is just going to focus on the Kronos? The Kronos is a great system but seems like there would be a market for a less expensive and simpler keyboard with great sounds without all the programming. Do you think Korg going to make any new SV1s with the improved RH3 keyboard that is going into the Kronos? Or a new model?

Any thoughts welcome, thanks, R
