anybody chain multiple MS2000 units here?

Should be enough. I use something similar in my setup but I never actually merge Out and Thru like that - it would be the most economical option if you are in the market to buy a merger - a simple 2 or 4 input box would do.

With a proper MIDI patchbay... there are a number of different approaches. You should still be able to do the simple 2-port merge necessary though.

As far as I've read, chaining MS2Ks is strictly usable for control only. Both units have to be set up with the same banks ahead of time. They can't be edited via the chain, only played. That's the way it was designed. If you change a sound in the keyboard, it has to be manually sent to the rack unit prior to playing, i.e. in excess of playing. Then, playing can commence. Of course, if different yet complimentary sounds are loaded into each machine, they can be played together for truly extraordinary tonal sensation. It might require a composer of truly extraordinary flair, possibly even genius. But, it could be done, and I intend to try it.

If the same sounds are already loaded into both, then turning one knob should send the relevant CC/NRPN/SYSEX to 'turn' the same knob on the other unit.
