Ugh!

So I just bought a new TREX to upgrade the classic. Got it in, played for a few moments, everything was fine.

Turned it off and then back on so I could insert a USB flash drive. Got it in, loaded an old sequence, the L/R sound stopped working.

I went through the diagnostics which didn't turn up anything. Reset and reloaded factory settings (which is fine with me).

I turned off and turned back on and still nothing.

However, I leave it off for like 10 seconds, turn it off and back on, and everything seems to work again.

This same thing seems to happen any time I turn it off or on quickly (and I'm not doing anything with SEQ or saving anything).

This doesn't SEEM like a bug, but is that it or am I dealing with something defective here?

If its a blank screen then its a known issue. And there is no real fix for it. Mine does that sometimes. I changed it with a new one a few years back & it did it as well. I just leave it on with the blank screen and then it all turn on after a little while. And it shouldn't happen all the time.

Hope this helps

No actually, it's turning on and sitting on the main screen, allowing me to change between programs/combis, but no sound on anything.

Actually, error just started coming up with "Battery Voltage for Calendar IC is Low."

Could that be the culprit?

I changed mine out as soon the warning came up. Hope that's the issue. Try it. The battery isn't that hard to swap out.

Keep us posted.

Well, I replaced the battery and this message is not coming up now.

However, about one out of every ten restarts now this issue is still happening. It is not nearly as frequent - but it'll go through the whole start up and no sound.

Maybe it really is just a bug...still strange though.

Silence...

I play a lot of outdoor gigs and places with questionable power (low voltage) and have seen this behavior more in those venues -- 110 or 105 volts vs 120. It hasn't hurt my Triton Classic, Trinity or T-rex (knock wood) yet.

I've also seen it happen when the keyboard is "on" before power is plugged in.

When I get the blank screen just cycling the power (off/on) seems to fix it 99% of the time. The other 1% requires prayer, malediction, and a sharp smack upside the joystick... and cycling the power again.

Hm, that certainly could be possible. I live in an older place...

Perhaps I can attempt changing outlets or I can just deal with it. It's not a HUGE issue and don't know if it's worth being out of $200 in shipping (for receipt and sending it back). I'll give it another few days and see if there's anything else I can do.

For the most part, it is working great!

Or try a computer stabilizer like a UPS. If you can borrow one for now and test it out.

If you think there may be a problem, contact your Country Korg Distributor's Tech Support group. That is what they are there for.

Don't know if this is part of the problem - probably not - but just want to make sure you're inserting your USB stick while the instrument is off. According to Korg, doing otherwise can damage both the T-rex and the media.

I've owned two Extremes, first an 88 note and now a 61. I've had the blank screen issue happen with both, but only a couple of times over all these years. A reboot has always fixed it right up.

I can't imagine life without an Extreme - First purchase was in 2006 - sold in '08 to help finance my Oasys - second Extreme purchase in '09.

I hope your T-rex is not defective, or at least that it can be fixed without breaking the bank.

I wish you the best of luck, my friend.

Ok, so what sort of damage can be done by inserting a compact flash drive while the keyboard is on?

According to Korg, it can damage both the media and/or the instrument. I don't recall if they mention exactly what damage may occur, I just know that they state not to do it.
