I think the discussion about the processor technology used in the Kronos is an interesting one even if it was started by a troll.

But then the troll reappears, complete with ad hominem attacks, name calling, shouting and swearing, even in another language... (the forum users who answered the troll in its own language at least translated what they said into english).

If the troll cannot be defeated, it should be deleted. :twisted:

The Intel Atom Platform

A paradoxical platform: The processor is a success (even if its performance is weak in absolute terms), whereas the associated chipsets are not worth their salt. Overall, the gains compared to older platforms remain slim, and we hope that Intel will be offering chipsets that are better suited in the future.

Pros

* The price: $29 for an Atom 230
* Low power consumption
* HyperThreading, a good feature on this processor

Cons

* Weak overall performance

* The chipsets
* Very poor 3D performances
* A mismatched platform

The Intel Atoms CPUs are not outdated, the last ones was launched Q4-2010, and they (at 1.6Ghz) have similar performance than a P4 3.2Ghz (on one thread applications, on other they are surpased) and even better with applications with SMP (betwen 150%-200%), with only 1/2 of the power comsumption at idle and 1/5 at full load.

The Kronos does not run over a multipurpose OS like Windows, so all CPU power goes directly to it.

Also, and x86 CPU is far more powerfull than any CPU on other workstation like any Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif.

For the info about the Atom-P4 comparison. look here (just blah blah without links, its blah blah)

Pentium 4 vs Intel Atom

Regards
Alvaro.

Indeed, and it would be very funny to have some actual specifications for the CPU's in Roland Fantom, Yamaha Motif (or even Korg M3) for comparison.

There are modern jet fighters (I believe the latest generation of Russian Sukhoi Su-37) as well as combat helicopters that power their systems with Intel 486DX processors.

In a single-purpose application you choose a CPU on a lot of other criterias than speed alone.

Also, if the Kronos used an i7 processor, it would require a lot more cooling than the Atom. And fans make noise, not only audible noise but electronic noise as well. In a high-end audio application you'd like to minimize this.

The point is that the Kronos is what it is. It does what it does. And all this with the processor that it has. If it was just a simple matter of spending another $100 for a bigger CPU and that's all it takes to add new features, the competition would have done this already. Building a new synthesizer workstation is so much more than finding a good CPU.

First of all, I believe the forum is based in Ireland, Europe, but I could be mistaken. :P

Second of all, while the real Hugo Chavez IS in America, I am in Norway, Europe. :P

Third of all, the Freedom of Speech in a forum like this goes only as far as the moderators decide. If you don't like that, you are free to move on to another forum anytime. :P

Fourth of all, I don't believe God has anything to do with trolling. :P

And fifth of all, may I ask how old you are? Anyway, I can recommend this link for you:

BTW, do we have a reliable source for the info that the Kronos does indeed use an Atom processor other than macalisters words?

Freedom of speech does not include offensive ad hominem attacks:
in no democratic country of the world.

Else the only pepole who could complain about missing CPU power, would be users who bought the device and would meet performance problems, no? Certainly not someone having no idea at all about Kronos performance, several months before he has even been able to touch the device in a store or read a review based on testing facts.

The Oasys worked fine with a slower processor, and this whole discussion here is based on "macalister's" completely clueless assumptions, without ANY proper knowledge about the whole board design of the Kronos (and that's much more than just a dual core processor).

And yes, someone who becomes offensive, should be warned and then, when doing it again, just be kicked. And someone daring to misuse the word God in this context is not worth any answer anyway.

name calling is an offensive thing to do... You should be more polite with the people on the forum, or you will be banned...

Pa, todo bien, pero estas siendo muy agresivo, tranquilizate un poco!

They did send people on the moon with a central station having total power less than a Pentium 133 Mhz... so way way less than the Kronos or even your smartphone.

This topic would be much more interesting, if Korg would have made their promise™ to keep developing the workstation as a platform and introduce even further additions to engines and effects. Then the processor choice would at least have given us hints about the potential of growth, but because at this point Kronos is treated as a normal "closed" workstation, this is meaningles topic. If it works, whats the problem? If it works, then other synths must have ridiculous processors...or would have, if something that works well was considered ridiculous. As Kronos already beats other synths specs handsomely, the tone that this threads starter chose is amusing. Processors should also be less interesting, than the programs they run.

Atom, indeed, doesn't seem anything handsomely premium or expansive, but I'm sure there are enough of different Atom processors for different purposes, and we don't know if its customized...or if it was Atom in the first place, or if there was DSP-processors helping the main processor.

And Rfoshaug. Are you the same dude, who composed that Voyager song? I had already settled down with my instruments and I thought, that I had tamed my desire to get new synths for a while, but my gearlust was merely a sleeping dragon, until the day I heard that song. After that I have had terrible GAS for at least two years! Beautiful song and touching sounds.

Do you guys really believe this guy knows anything about computers and
processors? Dont waste your time with technological terminologies please.
It means nothing to him since he dont know what that is, he Googles Wiki
and then posts here. I find it funny for someone to even reply to him or
give him attention...till yesterday he was watching pigs down on the Balkans
then he got a refuge/asylum in a Western Country, then washed dishes for
like 3 years and finally got an IntelCeleron DELL on Credit...do you really
believe he has ever seen a Motif? Lolz...ahhhh...only if you guys knew where
we come from you would understand.

And yes, RFO is the dude with cool Gloves and Lights around... :D

BasariStudios,
may I ask you for a little political correctness here. It's a musical forum. Not one where you should offense people based on where they are from, and in this case you're obviously wrong.
Thank you.

Without actually opening one up, my guess is that everything bar the Oasys and Kronos (ignoring the OpenLabs/Music Computing stuff), all other synths are based on ASIC chip (Application Specific Integrated Circuits). These will have been designed to do specific tasks and nothing else which is why you can't change the type of sound generation that it uses - if it started out as an FM-synth, you can't change it to do wavetable or modelling. With a computer chip, you simply change the code.

Isn't a workstation judged by its features and the way it sounds?
Even if you use the most powerful processor in the world to run something which sounds like crap, it's just very powerful crap.
Hey, this is very true.

Who cares about processors? Yes, maybe it's interesting to know but that's all. It doesn't really help the keyboardists if they know the type, the speed and all the unimportant specs. Think about Kronos as an instrument.

Nobody outside of the engineers. The OP is absurd.
