KP3 Midi Messages

Post by CurlyWS »

This question has probably been run over a few times but I want to just clarrify. If I was to wire up the midi out on the kp3 to a DAW I've been told only these messages will be recognised,

The Kaoss Pad 3 sends the following MIDI events:
Touch Pad X-axis CC #12
Touch Pad Y-axis CC #13
Touch Pad on/off CC #92
LEVEL Slider CC #93
FX DEPTH knob CC #94
Hold button CC #95
Sample Bank A button C1
Sample Bank B button C#1
Sample Bank C button D1
Sample Bank D button D#1

I would like to know if this is correct from anyone's experience. Does it not send messages from the shift button for example. Also does the kp3 still function normally when it's set to send midi, or does it go into some kind of midi mode or something.

And I realise the sample banks only send messages once a loop settles there.

Using the KP3 editor software, you can set the midi events assigned to those controls. You can download the software now, even without having the KP3, to see exactly what you can control and what midi events you can configure.

The KP3 effects/sampling don't work in Ext. Ctrl mode. It acts only as a midi controller in this mode.

Not all the buttons are assignable in Ext. Ctrl mode. The shift button is not assignable. You use it to manually get out of Ext. Ctrl mode along with the [8] button.

oh how frustrating. This ruins my whole looping design. What's the point in the kp3's midi unless you wanna turn it into a poor midi controller then?

Actually, I think I may not have been clear in my response. I thought when you said "when it's set to send midi" you were talking about the Ext. Ctrl mode. The KP3 does send and receive midi events when in normal mode too, but the exact events you listed are the default events - and can be changed in the Global settings in the editor. That lets you use the effects, record the midi events, and play them back in a sequencer. You can also filter and enable/disable which events that it uses. Ext. Ctrl mode is when you want the KP3 to act only as a midi controller, and the editor lets you set those midi events too. These can be changed under the Ext. Ctrl settings in the editor.

All will be more clear when you download the editor and see the options.

Aw that's what I wanted to hear! Yeah I have got a couple of kp3's already and have been on the editor once and thought 'this is boring' and left. The reason I ask these questions is because I know nothing about midi really, just that they send digital signals.
Thanks!
