Improvements to the Split/Layer functionality

Post by Siriosys »

I don't know if Korg staff read this forum, but I'm wanting to make a suggestion regarding the current Split/Layer functionality. I'm currently using v1.2 of the OS.

The current Split/Layer implementation is OK, but obviously very limited. I'd like to see if Korg would be prepared to provide us with a way of creating our own Splits/Layers within the Editor using the various sounds from each of the SoundPacks.

I noticed that they have 'revealed' the Basses stored on the ROM in SoundPack2 and although the bass sounds themselves are a little lacking in variety, I immediately saw a use for them. HOWEVER, the factory-chosen bass sounds were not to my liking when combined with the awesome EP's. So, I'm having to carry my 25Kg Roland RD700SX and stand where-ever I play. This is particularly apparent when I'm playing funk and need a much more punchy bass sound than is currently on offer.

I've got 2 particular EP's and 1 organ sound that I love to use and I'd like to have the same bass sound available to my left hand on each of those 3.

So how bout it folks, if you're an SV1 user, would you want some ability to create or edit splits and/or layers within the included SV1 Editor?

Regards

This is actually an interesting topic. I for one actually likes SV-1 the way it is. Piano / EP, and or clav, with effects. I bought SV-1 because of the keybed, sounds, the fact that it looks just f-ing awesome, and soo easy to use.

If I required to play with more complicated sound, I use a smaller keyboard that actually dedicated to do that, (currently waiting for my m3 to arrived...)

Though I can see how it'd be useful if the ability to edit the split / layers is included in the next editor update.

Hi CommonGuy

My reasons for purchasing the SV1 were two-fold. The first being that the RD700SX is too big to carry around all the time, so I wanted something smaller and more lightweight but still had a decent keyboard = there's not too many PHA keyboards less than 88 keys on the market.

The second reason I got it was because of it's faithful reproduction of the original instruments. I know that Nord make a wonderful instrument with their Electro 3, but the keyboard sucks severely for those of us who've spent most of our lives playing real Pianos.

........the split thing came about because I've been gigging a lot where there's no bass player and so the need arose for me to adapt my playing style to suit - funk just aint the same without a phat bassline! I do enjoy the Fretless / Piano split from SoundPack2 though.

.....Hopefully something will happen with updates in the future.

I suspect there's much more under the hood than Korg is letting us see. I believe all of the samples in the sound banks are already in the rom of the SV-1.

Korg should really just give us access to the same editor they use to make the sound banks. ;) Maybe we could fix the amp ourselves.

I've been suspecting this since finding out that there is 512MB ROM. Look at yamaha CPs or roland RDs: all have (besides hi-Q pianos) batches of useful samples that don't occupy much ROM. Clever strategy of Korg is that they didn't unveil this at once. Actually I don't profit from split function.
For pads/brass/synth I've always used a little synth over the stage piano. I have almost no oportunity to play bass. But if needed, I play the bass on the synth as well, editing it the way I want separately from the piano down there. AND the sustain pedal never holds the bass (that is terrible to happen!)

Midi control and SV1 split tones in Sound Pack 2

Post by dbt23 »

Question. Understanding that you can dial down/off the bass for the sounds in Soundpack 2 that have a pseudo-split bass by using the RX control....e.g. Result would be no sound/bass below the split point key.

Does anyone think that the keyboard midi control will still trigger via those 'left hand' keys (where volume is turned off) so that an external midi module with alternate Bass sounds can be 'driven' in place of the Bass tones included in some of SoundPack 2 'sounds'.

I have an older Roland midi module with a very good collection of Bass tones that I'm able to do this with another keyboard

...I don't currently have an SV1 (used to) to try this......watching the classifieds' for a used one.....

No, the SV-1 is not multitimbral. So you can only play the preset you have loaded.
Suggestion is to get Mainstage on a Mac and do splits from there (right hand going back out to SV-1 and left hand going to softsynth base). With audio output going through SV-1 (to make it simple on the main outs).

That could introduce some latency, which bugs me more than anything. It should be possible to use a hardware box, no? Connect a rack-mount bass sound unit to the keyboard via MIDI, and have it play bass notes when you play the lower keys? I'm not familiar with modern sound modules, so I don't know if you can program them to only respond to signals below, say, the G below middle C, but if you could, that'd do the trick. Then you could either leave the notes doubled on the SV-1's EP sound, or choose one of the factory splits and dial down the internal bass sound to zero so that the SV-1 only sounds above its split note.
