No - your thinking of the game BattleShips.
Played that often enough in my single figure days - lol

Battlezone was released wayback by Activision.
Its set in space - in the solar system on various planets.
A theoretical conflict between the US and the former Soviet Union over a Kryptonite-esq material found on various planets in the Solar System.
I don't want to give too many details away...
But the whole game design- story etc and the way its all done - brilliant.

Runs on about 64-128MB 16-32MB Videocard - low specs - but the graphics for the time and even now are amazing.
Its FPS, Vehicles and Strategy all rolled into one.
MP aswell...

Peace
Ausser.

PS - I never moved to the consoles - I think the games are too expensive.
With PC stuff - you can wait until it drops in price - the trade off being specs of course.

The only games I play are Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. Screenshots: [1] [2] [3] [4] (I also made a page about it, with more screenshots, if anyone's interested! [Wolf ET])

... and TrackMania Nations. Screenshots: [1] [2] [3]

Both are 100% free, online-multiplayer based, and are fantastic.

Otherwise I haven't really gamed since my Amiga days in the mid-90's (The Settlers, Monkey Island, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge II, Cannon Fodder, Superfrog, Speedball II, etc.)

The only console I have is the first PlayStation, with a few racing games (GranTurismo and F1GP), CoolBoarders 3, football etc.

I don't really "get" the more modern games, like GTA, Resident Evil, etc. A lot of it seems really, kinda moronic, lol. Like how many zombies you can shoot with blood spurting everywhere, or how many people you can beat up and pinch their cars. Not really my cup of tea. The sad thing is that kids play this stuff, and it's considered "normal"!

Just googled Battlezone and it looks funky, Ausser. Reminds me of the initial vector 3D games that came about on the 8-bit and later 16-bit platforms.

I remember that there was an arcade game from the early 80's called Battlezone that involved wireframe models of tanks from a first-person viewpoint (there was also a WWI airplane game produced by the same company called Red Baron that used the same kinds of graphics).

I don't know if that's the same game, but I certainly played a lot of it in the arcades back then.

Yeah RiotNerd,

I remember that arcade BZ also - there was a kind of periscope you had to look thru...
If I read some of the history correctly - I think that actual arcade version was somewhat the inspiration behind the Designer of the new game.

Peace
Ausser.

PS: Both versions of PC BattleZone - BZI and BZII are long discontinued now - and I think BZI is abandoned - aside from community modding/multiplayer support, its over 10 years old now - you can download BZI somewheres on the net, I'm sure.

Recently I downloaded the HALO 1 Demo - I just never really took to it I suppose - there are echoes of BZI/II in HALO, but the BZ series is a lot more in-depth IMO and a very accessible plot. Also, you can strategicly command vehicles from a kind of satellite view as well as build and commandeer them. OFP - took a lot of inspiration and courage from the BZ series IMO.

However if you ever get to play BZI thru to the end - and you happen to meet an Irish person who hasn't played it - DON'T tell them about the denumon - as you'll really spoil it for them....LOL
There are things about the BZ series that are fascinating to an Irish person....

PPS:
That looks good TIMO - I must give it a try.
