R3 shares its sound engine with the microKORG XL so they are interchangeable. The XL+ then added some additional sample oscillators which can't be loaded into R3 sounds.

Nothing to do with the Raspberry Pi, my Korg ARP 2600 is also the same and there is no processor in there.
