Drumkit samples size reduction

I'm guessing Anthony / or someone else with this kind of experience could answer me this;

Let's say I have sampled between 4 and 6 Velocity layers for each drum and cymbals on a Pearl Custom Drumset. I have mic'ed both SNR bottom & top, as well as KICK inside and outside. Now, the total of waves have a size of 80mb, however if I put that on the Pa3x - no room for guitars or basses. - Cant have that! ;)

How do you Guys get it to fit with alot of other samples in a single 256mb set file?

Ofcourse, if I get this to sound descent - I'll share freely! ;)

That's the major problem in PaSeries in now days ... not enough Ram space to make a decent SET (hoping to be resolved in Pa4X).

Well , if not enough ram space has left for you then your solution is compression , if you've already done it ... bad luck
you have to unload other stuff !

Now in case you didn't tried it yet , or not all fit together in order to compress your merged set then do the following :
- A backup of your PreviousSet.SET is required.
- Prepare your DKs after deleting all other samples & multisamples , as I suppose you already did , compress your
samples that will become 40 Mb and save your SET as fe DKSet.SET
- Load you PreviousSet.SET , also compress all samples , which will reduce in half your set size , open your
DKSet.SET / sound / DK / and load only DK sounds you had made with custom drums one by one and all compressed
drum samples will be loaded automatically as I'd explained in past.
In that case both merged compressed SETs , will occupy the max. 128+40 Mb of your Ram space (If Ram is expanded).
- Save your final compressed SET under a new name.

Hope your solution is included in above :D

Can I compress samples after combining and loading a new set in Pa800/Pa2x?

Unfortunately not ... the only PaSeries that supports compression is Pa3X !

Thanks for the reply Antony.. ;) The 256mb limit in the pa3x is a freaking annoying limitation, when everything else is build pretty much as a Workstation. I'm absolutely sure the pa4x will solve, as I believe Korg did this limit - in order to sell a new model. Otherwise it just doesn't make sense to me with such a small ram limit. It can't be a hard fix, perhaps an OS update could feature it?! Although I doubt.. :)

Knowing we have this limit, is there a good external sample/sound converter that will convert samples to a smaller wav or etc filetype readable by pa3x???

Definitely noway in any sampler ...

Nope ... they didn't made a limit at all , 256 Mb is definitely the limit of this samples paging DOS based hardware since Pa800 !
The only innovation in Pa3X at this point , is compression option that can double samples size , also pushed on it's limits
(also used as default in Pa900 of 96 Mb total Ram) , and this is actually a hardware limit that will never change in current models.
But let's say that they decide to preserve current hardware and use an expensive 1 GB ram module then samples loading booting
time will be increased to 25 minutes without ST-BY battery which has to have 4 times more energy capacitance for 4 times slower loading time !!!

As I have explained in the past , Ram samples drop method is applied by default in any sampler brand and VSTi due to
real time access of samples with no latency since RAM is more than 2000 faster than the most advanced SSD/flash Rom device !
This will never change at next 10-15 years so manufacturers tried to find alternative solutions to save Ram , starting in VSTi using
DFD method (direct from disk) where portion of sample waveforms are copied to Ram and the rest portions are read from ordinary
media (SSD/flash memory) and recently applied to Kronos/Yamaha.

Therefore KorgPa has to make entire hardware changes and technology upgrade to overcome this limit in PaSeries
in order to use for instance 512 Mb Ram size and expanding sampling management up to 8 Gb using DFD method.
This is what sound developers like me , are expecting from Pa4X , among other basic extra features !!!

By the way I want to notify something about streaming from disk mode you don't know ...
In this mode , a portion of approximately 0,5 Mb per sample is saved in Ram as the attack portion of the sample to be played
in real time , that means if our samples for instance are an un-looped grand piano of 40 seconds duration per sample , then
this piano of 2 GB size will occupy only 60 Mb of Ram space , But if your samples consist of drum samples of 0.4 Mb size then
a size of 256 Mb of those drum samples will occupy the whole 256 Mb Ram ....
:D (Just like today's PaSeries status)
Conclusion : an arranger is a more demanding device than a workstation , where many users use custom drumkits so
definitely just a streaming mode feature is not enough since at least 1 Gb DDR technology Ram is also required !!!

Looking to buy sampled realistic drum kits

I am looking to buy a couple of sampled drum kits for my Pa3x...but not to spend 1,000 Euro on full set up to replace all sounds in keyboard.

Can anyone provide details where I can buy a good sampled live drum kit (with good snare) ?

A couple of alternatives would be appreciated...

If any one has a kit they did and are willing to share that would be great

Thanks in advance

:D ... Indeed !
You may missed there , small standalone libraries "Pa3X Sound Libraries" tab !

Wow Antony, you actually finally made that possible now?! Have been waiting, and suggesting this some time... I must admit then, now you have me becoming seriously interested, in supporting your Work. The studio bass sounds amazing, almost like some of the VI's I use in the studio. Very good accomplished.
- Have 2 questions, however if that's alright?!

1; How come the snares in your demo sound a Little "far away", they're not really "biting" in the mix? Is it the lack of effects, or did you simply choose it to be like that in the devoloping phase?

2; Will you do a pack like these two with your guitars as well. Having the drums, bass, and guitars would be the perfect solution I believe (and I don't think I'm only one on this thought) ;) Perhaps maybe even like a smaller bundle than buying your Whole producer package. Have you given this any thoughts, maybe for the future?

Once Again, very nice samplings... I really like that Gybson 6-string, it had me all mellowed! ;)
