Can SF2 files be loaded on Pa900 ?

Post by moebrand »

Hi guys,
According to Pdf Manual for Korg Pa900, SF2 " sound fonts" are readable by Korg Pa900, I am wondering if you can load SF2 files Directly without any tweeking or changes, has anyone done so and confirm it ?
Thanks!

I hadn't realised this - my PA3X is getting "old" now!!! No SF2 on PA3X - an update perhaps?????

Thought PA3X was the flagship, not the "lagship"

Yes, I was surprised and disappointed Korg did not include the SF2 in the last upgrade.

Thanks Billy for your reply , in that case I should consider upgrading my pa800 to 900 since I have tones of sf2 files to use .

moebrand,

I purchased a few sets from Digital Sound Factory and they loaded right in and already programmed to the keys - just added a bit of tuning - great fun too.

As mentioned in the manual due to the deep differences with Korg’s own format, some Instruments from the SF2 file could not be imported (for example, Instruments with overlapping zones).

As a large number of sf2-parameters allows complex structures of sf2-Instruments it would be interesting, what are the real restrictions when importing complex SF2 in practice.

To import poorly-equipped simple sf2-Instruments with at least less few samples on the basis would be no big deal.
kind regards

I don't really understand why would anyone need sf2, which are anyway a very old format, when there are so many much better native sounds in Pa900...

The only use I see is for special FX or sounds, but not really for general sounds.

No?

Korgs are as old as Sf2 - but that does not matter and there is no difference to assess someone of both would be better.

Look to the structure and extensible list of parameters sf2-format provides and you will find excellent features of sf2 (one of them are overlapping zones). If you are familiar with sf2-specifications you really are able to create wonderful general sounds - not only special FXs.

So in basic can Pa4X load a synth sound with 6 layes directly on the Sounfont import ?
I mean just like osc 1 sample layer 1
Osc2 Sample layer 2 etc?
I have tried load sf 2 files but it wont load them amd if it does load its only 1 layer.
Genos YEM can load all layers to an instrument file why can,t KORg do the same,
it saves time.

Pa900 - import sf2

Yes, but due to the deep differences with Korg’s own fomat some Instruments from the SF2 file can not be imported without not being prepared for it (non-overlapping necessary).

Oscillators nothing have to do with loading or importing samples, but with building PCG-Files (sounds and drumkits).
*
With Pa900 you can LOAD single Samples in KSF, AIFF or WAVE format and you can IMPORT sf2-Instruments without overlapping zones. As result of importing sf2-Instruments you get Multisamples, that are base for Sounds (PCGs) in Pa-Keyboards, you could create with that Multisamples.

How much Multisamples you want to use in PCGs is yours, does not depend on amount of Multisamples you get after importing sf2-instruments.

You can not load sf2-files but import them. If importing non-overlapping sf2-instruments, you get as much Multisamples as sf2-instrument consists of, but in case of overlapping (also occurs with stereo-samples overlapping same keyrange) importing is not successful. So it's recommended to prepare sf2-bank not to contain overlapping instruments before importing (simply done with free software like polyphone).
*
On Tyros5 and Genos one can create new voices based on user waveforms (samples) from preset voices (XG voice architecture). Using Genos YEM - to be honest - you have much more serious restrictions, like inability to control element-level velocity sensitivity, that prohibits construction of well-behaved voices. So not a good example to emulate.

Also amount of XG-layers (elements for a voice) is limited with eight (Pa900 24 x 2 = max 48 Layers).
*
PS: It is recommended rather to import single Multisamples (ie sf2-Instruments) than all Multisamples of the whole bank (ie sf2-Preset).
kind regards
