Kronos X88 Aftertouch is much too stiff after calibration!
The Kronos X88 Aftertouch is much too stiff! I did the calibration on it but no matter what I do I have to apply far too much pressure to the keys to get response. (Yes, I know you need to have Aftertouch programmed in to the patch to have effect.)
I suggest Korg allow the user to set the offset and gain and curve of the Aftertouch MANUALLY instead of the terrible procedure they now have in the OS which attempts to make setup easier. Is there some trick I am missing?
With the money paid for this synth I expect better that this.

Have you tried working with the after touch curve? GLOBAL==>BASIC==>BASIC. Settings of 4 or 5 require lighter touch than default (3). Settings above 5 are special purpose, so don't use until you've read the help file that relates to their use. If you find this change to be helpful remember to WRITE GLOBAL SETTING.

Hi Bill,
Yes I have. It wasn't "the fix" unfortunately. At least none of the curves gave a good feel. I have to really press hard to get response even after I have programmed a patch to respond fully.
Same problem on my friend's Kronos 88x. We even calibrated the internal offset and gain trimmer pots inside the Kronos (pretty much every keyboard with Aftertouch has them). Immediately after doing that we were able to get a nice acceptable response - BUT - as soon as we went through the Aftertouch calibration procedure from the front panel, the response went right back to being very stiff. I think the calibration routine from the front panel needs some fixing.
I could find no way to use the front panel Aftertouch calibration procedure or finding an Aftertouch response curve that would give a comfortable response. This is why I strongly feel that either the calibration procedure needs to be tweaked or the user should be given more control of the Aftertouch offset and gain from the front panel.
Maybe I am missing something. How are others doing the Aftertouch calibration procedure on their units?

I would have to say this is the thing I like least about my K88.

Not exactly - there are some limitations. If you don't push hard enough it won't except it. Can't really set up a super soft touch.

Search for afterouch in Rolandclan forum for Fantoms X and G. You can find tens of posts. Few years ago there was a tread about fixing aftertouch problem. VELCRO tape (tape without hooks) between keys and aftertouch sensor significantly increases sensitivity. I made it in Fantom X8. If works almost perfect. With more sensitive aftertouch you should more precisely control pressure on keys. Some times it causes unexpected sound change when I forget about it. I think, aftertouch supposed to be pretty stiff to prevent from unexpected sound change.
Can someone post where to find the Aftertouch calibration procedure in the manuals. I could not find it.
As stated by someone else in this thread, when I also go through the Procedure on the Kronos, I have to push much too hard in order for the Kronos to accept my readings.
I really think the set up procedure needs to be refined by Korg. I think the Kronos is capable of being calibrated much more sensitively if only the user could set the offset and gain manually OR if the procedure were refined to where it allows a more sensitive zero point and maximum point. A meter should be on the screen to allow accurate manual setting of these two parameters and to verify that Aftertouch is working fully. (the Yamaha VL1/7 had a great system like this.)
I prefer they simply forego the auto procedure and allow the user to simply set the zero offset and max points as parameters. This will work much better and might even avoid all of us further damaging the pressure strips in our expensive keyboards!

Thanks Ed,
I found it on page 808 of the Parameter Guide. Unfortunately I've been doing the procedure correctly already.
I think the problem is mainly that the minimum pressure threshold required to get the calibration procedure to start reading is far too much.
Is anyone else able to get a nice comfortable aftertouch range happening on their Kronos X88?
