My Kronos X 73 arrived
I thought I would start a new post since my original post was about how to restore the factory settings.
So my Kronos X 73 key arrived the other day. Other than a small ding on one of the corners it’s in great condition. I’ve only had a few hours to play around with it but I’m generally happy so far. I thought that the quality of the sounds were going to blow me completely away but to be honest, I don’t hear a lot of difference between the Kronos and my Triton Extreme in some of the patches that I plan on using. I do find that the variety of sounds is much greater on the Kronos.
I was not able to find any sound that matched one of the organ sounds on the Extreme called Hard CX-3 (A029). I have been using this sound on songs like Born to be Wild. It has a grungy sound like the Leslie was being overdrived like crazy. I did try to edit a couple of sounds, but so far no luck.
Here are a few things I found strange that I was wondering if it was normal or if it is a problem with my board. I still have not done a reset yet, but plan to this weekend
1. It takes over two min to boot up. My Triton takes about 15 sec
2. On patch A049 (Mr Nice) I get a small amount of background noise as soon as I switch to it. Is this normal?
3. On patch A052 (Smoke In Japan) I get a ton of background noise as soon as I switch to it. Is this normal?
4. On Patch C017 (Jazzy Organ 2 SW1) I found that between middle C and the B to the left of it, it sounds like two completely different patches
5. I found that some of the string patches that are at the top of the Program, Strings list (C008, C009) seem to have a strange kind of wind sound when played that’s just below the string sound. It starts just up from the middle C key.
Thanks for all your help and advice

Hi Mark,
I also recently purchased a Kronos 73 (not the X) and I also have a Triton Extreme. I have installed all updates for the OS, so I will try to answer as many questions as I can. I do not use organ patches that much (yet) so I cannot help with the Hard CX-3 patch info.
1. Yes, it does take 2 minutes to boot up... it is a PC (basically) inside and requires as much time to load the os as your typical home PC
2 & 3 Seems to be part of the patch in the effects section. When you switch amp types ( 1, 2, Pre-Amp) you get added noise on 1, even more noise on 2, and it's quiet with preamp. I suppose when modelling a rotary speaker, the original sound of original equipment adds noise, and I am sure this is part of that. Kind of like kicking in the tube on the Extreme.
4 I think this patch is emulating 2 dual keyboard organ, and at split you have the upper and lower keybeds from the organ... but it does sound that way on mine as well.
5 I do get the strange sound you're talking about on patch 009, but not on 008... but then I've kind of noticed similar effects on the string sounds in the Triton also... couldn't quite put my finger on it... like bow on string, but waaay over-eq'd so it's extremely noticeable.
I haven't had time to delve into the programming of either, but hoping to in the next month as we gear more towards recording for our group. We have an M3 (It's in DE and I'm in MN right now) but I used to own an M3, and I think some the the strings on it had the same 'artifact' (don't know if it's the right word, but that's what I call it)... the more analog sounding strings don't seem to have that, so that's why I think it's a bow on string type of sound.... Hopefully I can get a good emulation of R.BladeDigiOrch ... for a 4 program Combi it's freaking awesome and huge!
Good luck and enjoy!

Re: My Kronos X 73 arrived
1. It took 2 minutes to boot up because of the size of internal samples that needs to be loaded into RAM (HD-1 ROM samples took 314 mb, EXs samples took >500 mb.. Not to mention if you had additional samples.Cobra Jet wrote:I thought I would start a new post since my original post was about how to restore the factory settings.

2. Don't know about it.. will check it later
3. It's normal.. It's from the IFX
4. The keyboard is being split into 2 sections.. Left part is for lower manual, the right part is for the upper manual..
5. don't know about it.. But it sounds like it's the natural behavior of string being played..
Love my kronos 88
Love my yamaha psr s910 as well

At 54 years of age, my 88 key Triton Extreme was getting a bit heavy to lug around for gigs and practice. Plus it takes up a lot of room when we play on smaller stages and when it’s in my music room. Other than the size and weight, I was very happy with my Triton. What first got me interested in the Kronos was that the 73 key version had weighted keys and not many other non 88 key workstations did. Also, since it was similar to the Extreme, I figured I would not have a huge learning curveKevin Nolan wrote:Congratulations on your Kronsos X.
Regarding taking 2 mintues to boot and 15 secs for your Triton - I'd prompt - what does that say about Triton when compared to Kronos, feature wise ??
Can I ask you - why did you go for a 73 versus 88 note version?
The ding should be accounted for. A discounted price, etc. It is not unreasonable to expect a pristine unit if new and at the prices that one has to pay. I have in the past, upon receiving a scratched unit, taken a picture and sent it to the mailer(an internet house) and they gave me the option of sending it back or accepting a fair discount. I took the discount even though I had rather have had an undamaged unit. I didn't want the hassle of sending it back for a replacement. With a Kronos, would you be concerned about possible problems with a reolacement?
All this, of course, is only if the ding is such that it causes concern.

This unit was purchased used & I was told it was about 4 months old. The ding is very small. I would say it's less then 3mm and is right at one of the corners. I'm not really that concerned about it. For a used unit, it's as nice as I was hoping for.summers2 wrote:The ding should be accounted for. More questions
I’ve been trying to read through the operation guide but I still have so many questions. I have band practice soon and I was hoping to have the Kronos setup and ready to play.
1. Are there more programs under the banks, under the category’s, or is it the exact same number just organized differently? If the same then why the need for banks at all?
2. If I tweak a program and want to save it to a different location, is there a good place to save it that will not over write other programs? It looks like User G might work as the other User banks already have programs in them.
3. How do I set the rotary sound on a patch to start in the fast setting as soon as I select the program. I tried turning it on with the joystick, and saving but that didn’t work.
Thanks
Mark

1. Category selection offers the same sounds as the bank view. I'm too tired and there are to many reasons for me to list why banks exist.
2. An empty bank is the best place. But yiu have seven more than you think; U-AA through U-FF. You reach them by pressing INT-A and U-A together, or INT-B and U-B and so on. Or you can go through the bank view
A couple are meant for HD1 sounds (the sample based engine) and a couple are meant for EXi sounds. You can change this in the global menu under the utility drop down menu. You will erase anything in a bank when you switch its type.
3. It depends a little on the program. For most CX3 programs, the rotary settings will be within the engine on the amp/rotary page. You should be able to set the starting speed there I think. For HD1 programs there will be a rotary simulation in the IFX section where you can change it. The reason it doesn't stick with the joystick is because it's a realtime controller. Anything it affects is reset when you reload the program.
